    water pump troubles

I am having a bitch of a time getting my water pump back on. i can't seem to make enough space between the pin perch on the pump and the tensioner to fit that spring and pin in to both slots. I only attached the one bottom pump bolt, as outlined in Bentley, but I still cant seem to make enouch space between them to insert that damn pin! any help?

While the pump can be replaced with the tensioner & belt in place, doing so is mostly an exercise in frustration. Bite the bullet and remove the tensioner & belt, mount the pump, and replace the tensioner and belt. Unless the belt has recently been replaced (within the last couple of k miles) use a new belt and tensioner.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I already replaced the tensioner and belt. I dont want to have to take the belt off, that would be a huge undertaking considering I already replaced all of the front hub assembly. THe tensioner is still loose, i left it that way on purpose to allow me to move it and get extra clearance. any other ideas?

dude it can be done. have patience. the biggest issue is not screwing up that darn thin paper gasket for the water pump. use the lowest most bolt to rotate the pump out and then slide the spring and pin tensioner in. It can be done without having to remove the belt tensioner and timing. I done it. Just make sure that gasket does not get damage. Othersise you will be doing it again... like i had to.

Oh man, so glad I replaced the water pump with the timing belt and tensioner this weekend, all at the same time, like everyone on EARTH recommends.

I've done it also and it is tricky to get the pump in while not damaging the gasket. After one time (and almost loosing the tensiot pin and spring) I decided I'll pull the belt next time. Pulling the belt is really no big deal.

i just did this, i had to use my impact wrench to get the bolts in real quick while holding the pin in through the hole and compressing the spring
