    m10 starting problems

So the other day I registered up my grandfathers '85 318i auto (if it matters). Ran it for about 3 days, then coming home from work one night I ran it pretty hard. Next day i decided it was time to change the oil and put some engine restore in. Started right up to get on the ramps and stuff, drained all the oil, changed the filter put the new oil and restore in. Went to start it up, just cranked, then after a few times it started up very rough and died. This went on for a little bit but it eventually just died out. I checked all the fuel lines its getting fuel all the way to the rail, the spark is also fine. I thought it might be a vacuum problem but it seemed like it was getting a little suction when i was cranking it. (i pulled the hose and put my finger over it) Any ideas as to what this might be? I'm stumped and would appreciate any form of insight.

    Thanks

what kind of oil and 'restore' did you use? how did it run for those 3 days you had tags on it before you 'ran it hard'? was this car sitting before you got it? was it driven much?
sounds to me that this restore is preventing your car from starting. it may be too thick for it or something? you are in rhode island was it cold when you were trying to start it? if your oil is too thick for the temperature it can prevent a car from starting. try changing your oil again with just oil this time and see if it helps.

i know him, hes my buddy that why i put this ahahaha but...the car was sitting for like 4-5 months....and we had trouble starting it to begin with....but the problem occurred right after he changed the oil and put that shit in....so what are you thinking its clogging?....should we just change it anyway and not run that restore and if so.....will it still be clogged?

Ran pretty good for the 3 days, everything seemed fine, except for my throttle linkage was a little odd but that should have nothing to do with it. Then that one night i beat the piss out of her all the way home, holding her to redline or close every gear. But then the next day before i changed the oil she started right up and was fine. I have another 318 with an 85 engine and i put the restore in that and it did nothing like this....

hows your fuel pressure? maybe your not getting enough? perhaps you have something clogged in the system that got dislogged from your fuel tank. i dont think its clogged...i think that the oil and restore may be too thick for your car. what weight oil did you use?

didnt know you two were friends haha. neway welcome to r3v and now you have two heads to work on this instead of one

You remembered to put the drain plug back in right? you poured the oil in the right place correct?

just pointing out the obvious. its probably not a fuel delivery or spark problem. Use your head.

you said it started right up to drive it onto the ramps, which was after you ran it hard, and before you changed the oil.

It has to be something related to changng the oil.

Your supposed to put the oil in the gastank right? haha
I changed the oil correctly, i checked the fuel lines and its getting fuel all the way up to the rail. I pulled sparkplug 1 and it reeked of gas every time i go to crank it over it smells like gas around the car for 30 seconds then goes away, its not leaking gas i would have already seen a puddle of some sort. I found out that the engine mounts are gone but i dont see that messing up the engine starting, or maybe it does?

no, that wont affect it, unless the engine shifted enough to unplug something.

Did you take anything off when you changed the oil? unhoked the airbox to change the filter also?

May sound dumb but make sure the oil cap is on correctly, if its not on all the way you would have a massive vaccume leak.

Id say you fouled the plugs by running a cleaner through it, it WILL do it if you run it through a vaccume line.

It was an oil additive nothing to do with the vacuum system, and i took the airbox off only after it wouldnt start and found out today that the car wont start without it. But it was on when it wasnt starting so im still stumped.

I'm assuming you removed the aircleaner box to change the oil filter? Disconnect the boot downstream of the AFM and check the AFM vane for freedom of movement. Remove the boot and thoroughly check it for cracks. Also check to make sure the harnass connector is plugged in to the AFM.
