All of the electrical manuals you need is here: http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm

Fuse 12 runs most of the gauges. It is 7.5A. If it is blown, the tach will work for about 1 second when you start the car, then fail.

When you put the car in reverse it's most likely rubbed the coating off the reverse switch that send current to the reverse lights.

if not... if i unplug one component at a time and try with a new fuse it just blows right away....is there another way to test it without blowing a fuse?? or am i on the right track?

Disconnect the wire under the boot then see what happens.

hmmm ok...ripped the whole dash apart...took a test light reversed it(clipped it to alternator power...fuse 10 on both sides light up meaning its grounded)with the key off....switch in position 2 and no power goes to it....every unit unplugged by fuse 10 and it still blows the fuse....

                  anyone?? any suggestions?

maybe not the safest idea, and I by no means reccomend this

When guys upgrade to HID, they swap in a higher amperage fuse. Did you add anything to that fuse to increase it's load? maybe try a 10A?

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN PERIL -- don't want anyone blaming me when their car goes up in flames. Probably a grounded short. Any wires rubbing on the firewall?

thats tomorrows conquest...check to see if any wires are rubbing on the firewall....just a thought... the main ground underneath the passenger rear seat...if that came loose.....could that be a problem....checking that tomorrow just in case

actually tried a 10a and it blew instantly...

Hmmm, so this means there is power in the circuit aka short to ground. Was every thing off in the circuit?

Sounds like you are going to have to shot some wires for continuity. Long process and a pia but when you find it you will smile.

sorry im new to this wiring bullshit lol...so test each wire from end to end using a multi meter?

lol yes this fiasco is still going on

ok...fuse 10 is reading 12.02 volts without a fuse....figured out they are green and white wires....traced them to the three 26 pooint conectors to the cluster and they read the same...this is all in position 2, disconected the revers lights under the shift boot to eliminate that function and still blows

fuse 12 also runs the cd deck which works fine...and is not blown...anyone have any idears?? inspected most of the wires that were green and white...i cant see why there would be a short in the nicely tight wrapped main harness coming through the firewallthat branches off

anyone have a diagram, folowing the green and white wires running from fuse 10 to their destination????

Ill never forget a friend having the same problem, He fixed it the dumb way. " When low aperage fuses blow a 30 Amp will do" I told him that was a good way to fry wiring. He replied: Yea, but ill find where the problem is.
