If they work at all, there is nothing wrong with the elements. They are literally just a wire that gets hot (like a light bulb). The lack of heat is likely due to a bad ground or other connection...

Spring hat has some wear, but only the paint is missing. There is supposed to be a washer in there...

Ah, that's why I've never seen one. They only came in euro M50 cars. Every M50 car I've seen in the US has the "hot climate" version as you called it. Only M42 cars got it in the US.

Have you checked your cap and rotor for wear / carbon deposits?

Shortly after buying my E34, the radiator started leaking. It was a Behr that was date stamped 3 years old. Several others have had the same issue, at least with E34 radiators.

This is what I was thinking. The first time might have been caused by a bad oil pump like you thought, but perhaps the block warped then too and caused the second failure.
