Apparently 318is's only had one sender, just checked RealOEM for myself, and it only shows one. Strange. You may have a bad sender then, you can remove the four 8mm nuts on top of the fuel pump...

Yep, dead on the money. You can swap a fuel gauge by itself into an early cluster and be OK, though. The difference is entirely in the gauge.

I've cranked one before with no cluster. The coil wire problem sounds very possible if you haven't checked it yet. Should be the center terminal in the group of three closer to the radiator.

Nevermind. I forgot that you're working on an E, not an I car. On I cars, they have a toothed reference ring on the front crank hub that can very easily be installed incorrectly if you're not careful.

I put the LED conversion bulb in it and pulled the replacement bulb out of the tailcap, then melted down about 8oz. of lead and filled it. Gives the butt end a little more heft for easier......
