There's a couple people running DCTs in E30s here. Both use standalone controllers AFAIK. But I don't know if you could use the stock DCT computer or if standalone is better.

it's exactly the same. Just slightly different software - basically it has a speed limiter set to 125mph. There's no physical difference, advantage, or disadvantage to a 525 vs a 173.

The unloader relay just shuts down everything...

The unloader relay just shuts down everything else (HVAC, lights) so the starter gets full power. It doesn't energize the starter, but is triggered when the starter is energized.
