    M60 idle - yay or nay ?

Got my swap up and running , but it's been a while since I've driven a 540 car so don't really have a point of reference to compare what a good running stock m60 should sound like.

What do you guys think - https://youtu.be/RQ7bFhYAbBs

    Thanks

Sounds like heaven. Also very jealous of your lift.

Sounds like a stuck lifter, no ? Maybe I need to clean the ICV also as the idle isn't rock solid?

Doesn't really sound like a stuck lifter to me, more like chain noise.

I have a single lifter that sticks when cold occasionally, and it's a very defined single tick. That sounds more like a rattle. Or possibly multiple stuck lifters.

After it's warmed up, hold it at 3k for a minute or two, or maybe rev it up even higher a few times. Usually lifters will open up again, so if it doesn't go away, I'd start looking elsewhere.

Can't comment on the idle, your tach doesn't work. Mine is rock steady at 600 RPM, one of the smoothest idling engines I've ever owned.

Yep, will give it a go st 3k and see what happens then. Chain tentioner is brand new, all timing components were checked and are in mint like condition .

Any suggestions to perhaps add a quart of atf into oil and then drain and refill with new oil ?ive heard people use that trick to get the lifters to open up, anyone tried that ?

I filled it up with conventional 10w40 to get her running and then to drain and fill with synthetic after I know nothing is leaking etc .

That sounds like lifter noise to me, but hearing it in person is different.

When I rebuilt my last m62, that thing pretty damn quiet

Mine had a tick like that initially, but it went away after a drive or two. I'm thinking mine was a lifter, but it sounded different than this. I run 10w30 in mine, and have no issues at all. I'm thinking timing chains also, But if it's all new, then I don't know without actually being there to have a listen. Idle is lower than mine, but the overall sound is very simular to mine. I'm running a Automatic DMU still, so mine idles at like 1000-1100 when it's cold, and like 700-800ish when warm.

Also, try this trick; Obviously, in neutral, hold the rpms in between 2 and 2.5k for 30 seconds, let it rest another 30 and repeat.

Yep, will give it a shot and post an update today. Maybe will switch to 20w50 once I drain this first oil change as well.

for some reason I can't get the youtube embedding links to work , most of the noise is gone after running the engine for about 15 minutes.

My dads e38 is louder than yours engine noise wise. He says it's the piston wrist pins but I concur and say it's the timing chain. Replacing the one on the side only worked for awhile but switching to 20w50 made the car super quiet, even initial start up and warm up idle. And it didn't burn oil as much

There seems to be a lot of yes/no in regards to 20/50 oil, some say it's too thick for m60 on bfc yet some recommend it.

Depends in your weather conditions, originally we are suppose to be using 5w30? But if you go by weather conditions via owners manual says otherwise.
As my dad being a Amsoil dealer, I've done research and hard to specify. People using 5w30 on high mileage issues with no issues when they switched to thicker oil, all their issues went away

15/50 is another recommendation from someone on bfc e34 540 owner ...
