Andy, the body guy, has started on my dad's car.
a few weeks ago my dad had the hood, light buckets and hood sides media blasted at the same place that did my whole car about 4 years ago.

Painting already? Now that it's stripped down, how much rust repair needs to be done?

If I were you, I would get a boroscope, or prod at it with a pick, and check the inside of the doglegs, at a minimum. Maybe you'll get lucky since it's a California car, but I'm so paranoid about rust from my experience with these cars that I would replace the dog leg regardless of whether or not it rusted through. And mind you, it often starts on the inside, not the outside.

See dogleg section near the bottom.

It's my dad's car, not mine. it's a ca car so the rust is minimal. the whole body was inspected and spots repaired.
you can see the rust spots here:
My dad is the original owner of this Z. he has put nearly 400,000 miles daily driving it. It's been his goal to restore it since 1988 but it was drive-able up until it spun a crank bearing a few years ago. it has sat for about 4 years while we have worked on other cars. now it's time for this car to get new life breathed into it.

and they have all been fixed.

My dad's car is almost done.
Sherwin Williams metallic paint. original color.
the painter says a little more polishing and he is done.

so in about a year this thing might be driveable
to the discerning eye. yes those are original 1970s tires. my dad has been hording them in the garage. buying all the spares from pick'n pull cars that have never been run.

Love these cars and great to see one being saved, especially with the history.

Sod driving on 1970s tyres though!

Well, I got busy with life and forgot all about this thread.

My dad did finish the build and it rivals and has over taken my e30 for quality of restore. it looks factory fresh and i think if he were to add up all the costs of the parts he would be at ~40-50k into the car. Luckily he had bought the parts in the 80s when the stuff was cheaper and not NLA.

The engine bay is the same color but matte as it should be form factory.

This part has been sitting in the box 30 years waiting for this moment.

here is the only shot of the underside and this is before he pulled the whole back end out replaced with new or had blasted and powder coated the components that look dirty here.

                            (6 months pass)

                            baby's first steps.

these are 280 wheels and will be replaced with the wheels he's always run 15x6 appliance wheels. but here is the first shoot we did back in Nov 2017.

awesome. I saw a bunch at Willow Springs yesterday. They can hold their own against some much more powerful cars when built right.

This one looks fantastic. Ready for another 30 years!
