So I got some of the shorter m20 flywheel bolts but I'm reading on a separate post that I need these http://www.ecstuning.com/ES261004/PriceAlert/ pressure plate bolts as well. Are these different from the ones used in my m42 right now? Do you need these specifically like you need the flywheel bolts? Thanks

I don't see why you'd need different pressure plate bolts. The PP bolts on both my M42 and M20 clutches are exactly the same. I think maybe the post is just suggesting that you get NEW bolts rather than re-using the old ones.

I replace them with 13mm hex head 8mm shaft bolts to avoid using the Allan keys, grade 10.8, just be sure to follow the new torque procedure for them (38ft/lb if memory serves me correct) vs. the 8.8 Allen key bolts. I buy them by the box of 100 since we work on e30's for a living :)

            This should be a sticky.

Has anyone done this swap recently?

              I want to use:

              - m20 single mass FW
              - m20 clutch disk
              - m20 pp
              - m20 tob
              - m20 starter unit to replace stock m42
              - m42 FW spacer

              Will this work?

The TOB has to be the M20 323i one, not the 325i one. Also you need the M20 flywheel bolts (the ones that mount the flywheel to the crank), you can't use the M42 ones - they're too long.

I didnt bother with working out the M20 conversion.
If you stumble around on ebay.de you end up finding things like this http://www.ebay.de/itm/BMW-E30-E34-E...item231c6b8793

Combined with the pressure plate and sprung clutch disc from a euro m42 without air-con, you end up with an entire assembly that weighs less than the stock dual mass flywheel. (I think it came out at just over 11kg)
You need shorter flywheel bolts as well.

Even with shipping to Aus/USA you end up with a pretty cheap awesome 5.5kg flywheel.

m20 seems like a better deal since it can hold more power.

...So can use m20 TOB with my setup? anyone?

                      - m20 single mass FW
                      - m20 clutch disk
                      - m20 pp
                      - m20 tob
                      - m20 starter unit to replace stock m42
                      - m42 FW spacer

Like I said above, the TOB has to be the 323i one, not the 325i one. Pelican has them.

read post #13.....IMO you can use either of the TOBs and both will work. One you use with the "spacer ring" and one you don't. Both still allow the ring gear to engage the starter just fine. YMMV, but those were my findings, IIRC.

I would have used a standard TOB, but since I already had a new 323i one, I just used it.

Bumping this. BIG help and should be a sticky.

                              I'm using...
                              M20 fw lightened back side
                              M20 f1 stage 3 sprung clutch
                              M20 Sachs hd pp
                              M20 tob
                              M20 starter
                              M42 fw spacer.

One small thing to add to this. The M42 and 325i M20 TOB's are the exact same part number. The 323i is a different part number and is a different part obviously.
