    E30 Math - 25 months of ownership

Out of curiosity, I was looking at my aCar app on my phone, which I use to keep track of all of my car expenses.

I have owned my E30 for 25 months.

Including the cost of the car ($2000), I've spent $20155 and I have driven just over 120,000 km.

10% was cost of the car
56% of my expenses has been fuel ($11,247)
34% has been servicing, repairs and expenses. This figure includes regular maintenance, repairs, insurance, and licensing fees.

Gas on average has cost me $450/month. But I also drive a shit ton.

If I tally the cost of the car, and servicing/expenses, I come out to $352/month or $88/week. I did some quick looking at new cars and how much a monthly payment just for the car would be, assuming a minor trade and no money down, and I was looking at $450 month and up PLUS expenses and plus fuel.

I think I'm doing ok, all things considered.

All cars have a cost of ownership, might as well keep track.
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

I tried to cover this before, maybe I should update it. Knowing the actual cost per mile can really make you think about how you structure your driving.

The app I use to keep track of fill ups, service, etc. is called aCar.

It also calculates fuel economy, cost per km, etc. Pretty neat app and it can export into a spreadsheet.

I like to add all my fuel ups to the website Fuelly. Besides that I do keep track of parts bought but never added it up yet. Maybe post engine build I will. These things are interesting to see.

At one point I stated a spread sheet on how much money I spend on just one of my e30s. It made me realize that cheap older cars (German cars) are not cheaper in the long run. Spending 4k on a 2000 Toyota Camry is cheaper over the course of a year then getting a 1k e30 and getting it to reliable condition.

Granted, for me the cost of driving a bottle of vanilla is just too high for me.

Fuelly is pretty grade, I use the smart phone app, really makes you realize how much fuel you use.

True, but cruizin on Xmas day in the sunshine makes it worthwhile. I think I'm getting close to $10,000 1991 E30 vert.
