What about going all vintage on a system?

I still think it's the best bang for the buck

Yup, I did that as well. For speakers with the Linn I will be using some Celestion SL600s. Just for your amps make sure no caps or resistors have been repaired.

First home speakers ever tested with lasers...SL600 are sweet.

I had a chance to go to work for Celestion back in the early 80's. I really wish I had...

Built a diy phono pre-amp. Pre-amp is using BurrBrown op-amps, and the psu box is regulated dual 15 volt circuit with pcb mounted Talema transformer.

3rd box is a passive attenuator and source selector switch.

Also building a tube phono pre-amp and a fet based "Pearl" phono stage by Nelson Pass.

I love these "Context Engineering" split body enclosures, they come in different sizes and have a slots inside for mounting a pcb so you don't see any screws or anything from outside.

Gonna do a slight highjack on the thread.

I have a nad 3020a, quite frankly one of the amps that suit best my audio taste (the phono stage is epic), and it needs a recap.

The amp is famous for providing awesome sonics from cheap hardware (hence the beauty of it, it was very well designed ), so that leads me to a question, should i bother to use high quality caps on it or just go with generic unpolarised caps?

EDIT: A good review of the amp for those who don't know what it is http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/nad3020e.html

I'm running a Thorens TD-160 via a Technics SU-C800U Mk II pre amplifier and SE-A900S Mk II power amplifier into some KEF Cantor III's - sounds nice for what was a pieced together system for the dead right price (ie: $0). I usually run my vinyl through SL1210 M5G's into a much bigger rig though ;-)

                    well....since we side swiped the main theme anyway and there isn't a proper old school AV thread;

Vinyl is fab! I have an old Well Tempered Classic TT & arm with all of the Marigo Audio mods running a Sumiko Blue Point Special MC (BPS) and a Ttweights clamp, all sitting on a Thompson SeismicSink…love this set-up! Some of this stuff like the Marigo Audio and the Thompson accessories are no longer available. I would love to upgrade to a different low-output MC cartridge, but the cost of the cartridge plus the cost of need for another phono section is an issue. The BPS is nice because it allows me to use my Preamps existing phono section instead of having an outboard phono preamp.

I picked up a Shure M97xE audiophile cartridge from amazon. Now to build my Nelson Pass Aleph J amp and Pearl phono stage as soon as the boards arrive.

I know someone who is using tripath amps and likes them, one of the main reason was he needed 8 channels for a full active stereo system and they were cheap.

Bringing this thread back to life - what with vinyl being the fastest growing physical music standard at the moment.

                            Here's my modest system:

                            Uturn Orbit Turntable

Going into a Schiit Jotunheim amp with phono add on card. If you ever get a chance, check out Schiit's stuff - it has a nice minimalist design along with pretty decent prices for the quality you get. www.schiit.com Great name too :-D

                            .

Usually listen on a pair of Grado 325's, which strangely enough have come in both i and e versions.

What vinyl set ups are you guys rocking these days?

I have some vinyl, I need a turn table though. I have a sansui 881 and some ADS book shelf from the late 80's that my dad gave me. I want to find a turn table f4om the 70's to match the 881 but I have no clue what to look for. Oh yeah and I still need to get those speakerlab 7's.
