Catalytic Converter - Replace or Weld Hole?

In the process of taking off my rear subframe, I ended up taking off my exhaust from the downpipe to the muffler. Catback will have to be replaced as the muffler has a massive hole rusted through it. The downpipe looks good, but there is a hole in the catalytic converter a little smaller than a dime. It is located right where the cat narrows in the middle (where the driveshaft support bearing is bolted in).

Is it necessary to replace just because of this? The car will be registered and driven as a DD. I can't do a cat delete, but I'm thinking I can weld the hole shut instead of replacing the entire system for ~$400 from Magnaflow.

I didn't think to take a picture at the time, but I hope my description provides enough info.
