all depends on year. usually a getrag 260 from the associated m30 chassis will work.

they had the same trans, with different bellhousings.

the getrag 265 had a removable bellhousing which is neat, but good luck finding one.

      anyway--do some research--that m50 motor will not take a m30 trans.

I think a 2002 4speed will fit....then it will blow all the gears.

        I was lucky to find an e34 535i with a 5speed.

The m30 will take a a getrag 260/5, 260/6 265. But they need to be from a m30. The e12, e28, and e34 all used the m30. There are a lot of getrag 260/5 out there from the e28 535i.

I believe a manual 95 525i would have a getrag 250. Not a ZF. Tho if it's an automatic it could be a ZF or a GM derived transmission.

But regardless of it being a ZF or g250, it won't bolt up to an m30

My '92 cabrio has a Getrag 260/5. Anyone know if it will work with an M30 from a 735?

You can also use the Getrag 240 from the M10 if you can't find an M30 transmission - they aren't as strong, so it depends on your plans, it you have any dreams of adding a turbo down the track, then just get the stronger box straight up, but if the M30 is staying stock or close to stock it will be fine.

The 240mm clutch from the M30 won't fit with the G240, so there are a few options - a flywheel from RHD engineering with the M20 228mm clutch kit, an S14 or 2002 Flywheel with an S14 clutch kit, or a 215mm 318i flywheel with a HD clutch kit.

There's a sticky at the top of the M30 & other swaps section that goes through a bunch of options for the G240.

Thanks, I read several threads/posts. It seems to say the 260/5 will work but that no M20 box will work. My '92 cabrio has an M20 and a 260/5 so I'm confused.

The m20 bellhousing is in no way compatible with an M10 or an M30-
it's the same as the M42/m5x bellhousing, so no E36/46 will work either.

any m10 or M30 trans works, including E21 M10 transmissions.

So there is an m30 specific 260/5?

                        Thanks

Yes - e28s came with the 260/5. Some late e28s, and the e34 came with the 260/6.

                            For a M30 engine you can use a transmission from M10, S14, M30, S38.

The bell housing size will dictate what flywheel and clutch you can use.

And I wouldn't recommend using the g240 from the m10 imo. Not meant for the torque the m30 can put out.
