    Questions about cam upgrades

Hey guys, I'm new here but have been over at BFC and Bimmerfest for years.

My e30 is down for the winter and I have some projects planned for before spring. Right now I have the head off and I'm replacing all the engine gaskets. Part of my project is to install a 272 cam and of course now's the time to do it since the head is off. I'm getting some conflicting information on whether or not I need to upgrade the springs and rockers. Schrick recommends upgraded springs, but says they're not required. I've snapped rockers before in M30's, but never an M20. Basically I need to know if factory springs and rockers are ok with a 272 or should I spend the $600 additional to upgrade them?

I'll be finishing my project with a Miller MAF conversion, WAR chip, exhaust, possibly bigger injectors if necessary, and a tune. The car will see moderate track/autocross use and spend a decent amount of time at or near redline/high rpm, but will mostly just be used in town.

    Thanks for the tips!

Standard springs are ok but often it's better to get new ones unless you get yours checked out. Standards rockers are ok but with a new cam you probably want new ones so the new cam and new rockers break in together. HD rockers are a common "upgrade" but make sure you get new stock if you go down that path the old ones have quality issues

I'd get a plug and play MSx box before the MAF option

I've actually thought a lot about MS as well, just haven't researched it very much. I'll look into that a little bit more.

OE rockers are case hardened and refinish well. It's also cheap if you can find a shop that does it

I'm closest to Lewistown, but I hear there's one in Helena that I've been meaning to check out.

Rockers are very rev- sensitive. If you keep it to 6500, good stock rockers and springs will
              last years.
If you hope to spin much higher, you'll want to add nose pressure, at least, and the
HD rockers are, at the least, free of the voids that seem to be endemic to all BMW/Febi rockers
              of this vintage...

I'm in Billings myself. Helena and Lewistown are the only two tracks that I know of, other than the occasional autox event.
