What's going on with this new part?

Gents, I just received some parts for my shifter refresh, and the part below is the rubber insulator boot that installs just under the leather shift boot.

It came with a big plastic ring attached, and to be honest, I have no idea what do with it. I didn't pull anything off the car that looked remotely like that.

Anyone know what that big plastic ring is for? Thanks!

No idea. I tried replacing that part with my IE short shifter and it bound up really badly. I ended up not running it, which is unfortunate because they block a lot of heat and noise.

They've been coming with those for many years. I always just throw them away. I think they're just for storage and transport to keep from getting collapsed and torn.

Just a guess but I think you use it like a noose to help get the flap situated in the trans tunnel.

Good theory! You may have something there. I won't cut it off till I'm sure I don't need it for the install.

I was also thinking that maybe the part fits BMW models other than the E30, and the ring applied to those cars.

Or the ring could just be a handle to make it easy to carry the boot to the garage LOL

When reinstalling the shift assembly into the car put that plastic ring through the trans tunnel hole and pull on it once your sitting in the car.
pull the plastic handle. That rubber lip will go over the trans tunnel and seal correctly

iwantspeed is right on. However, I think the setup is more for the professional mechanics/factory folks than it is for us home gamers.

                      Thanks!
So do BOTH plastic rings come off after install or do I cut off the large one and leave the smaller one in place?

I suppose it doesn't matter either way...

This is exactly how it worked. Freaking brilliant! Thanks for making the install so much easier, BMW! Both rings do come off after installation, so just the rubber boot remains.
