    Cooperman's 91' 318is restomod+ cammed M90 swap

This thread is long overdue. I acquired a 91' 318is from a guy that hauled it to Kansas from California and then parked it in a field for 5 years. The car was super solid and complete, with some dings and bad tires. It was a former dealer loner car with a clean carfax. I was scared to death when I was loading it up on the dolly because his brother (whom he told me was crazy and had severe mental issues) was wielding a piece of wood and mumbling about it being his car or something. I kept my big channel locks nearby just in case he decided to jump me. Got it loaded up and home with no further issues.

It sat in my garage for a year, then cleaned up the fuel system and replaced a ton of parts on the m42. Got it running and threw some snow tires on it for the winter and had a little fun. About a year ago I was poking around some M30 motors I had sitting and decided to pull the head on one that was a bit of an oddball. To my delight it was an M90. I promptly broke it down and got it prepped for swap into the e30.

Life happened and I got sidetracked until a couple weeks ago. Since then I have been busting it out. All of the suspension is off the car. the motor is being rebuilt right now, too (depending on what I feel like working on). Plan is as follows:

Subframes fully reinforced with garagistic kit and repainted with chassis saver
New rear bearings and front beaarings and hubs
All new bushings- poly and poly injected
    e36 M30 steering rack
    H&R sport springs (1.5" drop)
    Koni adjustable shocks
Suspension Techniques Heavy duty sway bars
    Wilwood ultralight BBK (front)
    Rebuild rear brakes
    ABS delete
    SS brake lines
New fuel tank, pump, and lines

    Rebuilt m90-
Checked all tolerances to make sure it is in spec
New bearings (standard red), and fasteners (main and rod cap bolts)
    New Deves rings
Rebuilt head with paul Burke N31 cam and adjustable cam gear, heavy duty rockers, rocker locks, 3 angle valve grind

    e28 radiator

    S38 clutch
    17# lightweight flywheel
Getrag 265 transmission (removable bell housing)
    3.25 LSD

    Miller WAR Chip and MAF

I have some sweet wheels and some other small surprises, but that is the main stuff.

Most of my posts from here on out will be pics.

Bearing halves in, ready for crank.

M90 short block assembly. The block is painted with POR 15 engine enamel. This pic was right after I stabbed the crank. Cranck was perfectly in spec. Every single journal was dead on.

I had the block tanked and the cylinders lightly honed by my machinist.

The old bearings had very little wear. Love these old engines.

Subframe bushings all out. Took a ton of patience, a sawzall, a drill, and some heat. But they are out!

Reinforced sway bar attachment points. The grey splatter is weld through primer. All of this is getting coated with chassis saver.

Pulled the rear wheel hubs today. Used a bearing splitter and some wheel studs I had. I will pull the bearings out tomorrow and paint the trailing arms before pressing in the new stuff.

Looks like a great start man!

What is the major difference between the M90 and the M88? Seems like it should be easy to get some pretty great power out of it no?

                        M90 = sohc m88

Makes the same power as an m30b35

The M90 has more torque down low than your basic M30 due to the shorter stroke and bigger bore. My experience is that an M90 will keep up with an M88 or S38 until you reach third gear. I am hoping for +25 hp from the cam and engine management.

What's up Micah? If you need any help wrenching, just holler.

For anyone interested, the M42 stuff he pulled went to a great home. My 318is!

Please dyno it when you are all done!

I have been very curious on the Big 6 powerplants lately.

Whats the Bore/ Stroke of the M90 vs the basic M30s?
