With S62 crankshaft and correct pistons you could enlarge the volume to something like 4.6 ... 4.8 but it's not just worth it. Just source Alpina 4.8 or S62, much easier and cheaper :)

Or do what I just did and build an M60/62 hybrid....
I'm not sure how uncharted these waters are, but from the research I've done concerning this specific combination, I don't think it's been done. There's been a lot of talk about it and even a thread on Bfc about it, but everyone has stopped short of swapping the timing gear and heads from the B40 over to the B44, so this may be the first actual completed swap over. Everyone uses the M62 and just changes it to OBDI by relocating the crank position sensor to the front on a bracket, using 1 cam sensor and the TB/intake from the M60. I wanted to take advantage of the dual valve spring heads and the dual row timing chain setup from the M60, so this is a true hybrid motor. Or Frankenstein motor, depending on how you look at it. It was all a straight bolt together affair, except for the oil separator drain tube and the upper to lower timing cover gaskets. The drain tube has to have a bend put in it to clear the late model oil pump and the B40 head gaskets have the timing cover gasket integral to it, so those will have to be made. Other than that, it was pretty simple, really. Pics...
The heart of the hybrid motor... Timing chain crankshaft gear double row M60 on left, single row M62 on right
The upside of the architecture of the 2 motors being the same, remove the single row gear and replace with the double row gear
All of the timing components literally bolt on to the M62 block the same way they do on the M60... Like my upgraded timing chain tensioner? Size 10 Red Wing FTW, Lol!
M62 block with M60 heads and M60 timing gear
No B.S. B44 casting on the block, lol!
This takes advantage of the best of both motors... larger displacement, double row TC, double valve springs, no vanos, OBDI, etc...

We all know I have been looking to do this for a while now.
So, where be this thread on bf.c on the hybrid motor?
I want to do this to my E28 (I have an M60 complete, would need an M62 donor) and a buddy's '01 540i/6 m-sport with blown up VANOS, possibly bent valves, but he would need an M60 donor.

EDIT: IIRC, this is it... I didn't re-read through it all, just the first couple of posts and it seems like the one I remember... http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...with+M60+heads

Great stuff going on here.
Couple things to add. Found a place in UK with ltw flywheels for M60 at very nice prices.
Second, in answer to question: S62 oil pump sprocket has 29 teeth, and is about 3.6 inches OD.
Third: I'm working on a couple of M60/S62 projects, and have "stuff" lying around, or soon to be liberated.
For example:
A pair of M62 heads complete with some bent valves and minor associated blemishes from a thrown chain. Cheap to a good home, best if on chicago.
I'm going to be pulling out a perfectly intact 60k mile M60 from a spotless MSport. I'm replacing it with a 15k mile M60 instead of doing the above hybrid build. But, this would be a perfect core engine for someone so inclined to start with guaranteed low mileage heads and timing gear etc.
Will not have headers, starter, AC, or engine mount brackets as these were damaged on the low mileage one I just bought.
Let me know if anyone wants the Alusil. Can be driven now actually, quite strong as is.
Last: can anyone confirm for sure that on an engine stand with pan off that it's not too difficult to R&R a front lower timing cover on an S62 without pulling heads, vanos or messing up the timing?
Can guides be R&R without messing up same items?
TIA!Last edited by M3 euro ltw; 06-03-2012, 11:50 PM.

Hi Alex,
Can you share the info on the flywheels? I looked on uk ebay and after figuring out british pounds to us dollaer + shipping it comes up to about the same price as buying the UUC or JB flywheel locally?
Or did you find something else?
