    The official S54 OFH conversion thread

    In recent years, I've wanted to start tracking my red 330is, and thought it would be smart to add an oil cooler. I have also been pondering supercharging the car, so oil temperatures would be a concern to me. As we all know, the smartest way to go about that, is to buy a Euro S50 or S54 oil filter housing, as they are a bolt on affair to a US spec M50/S50 or M52/S52.

    The port for the VANOS line is not the same from Euro S50/S54, to US S50. Luckily, VAC Motorsports makes a pretty neat little banjo bolt/adapter, as seen here, which takes care of that issue:



    Turner Motorsport sells an adapter, to go from metric sized fittings, to -AN fittings, as seen here:



    I would like to run the factory oil pressure sender (so the red light on the cluster still works, just in case), as well as an aftermarket oil pressure sender, and an oil temperature sender, both for gauges.

    At one point, Randy Forbes, was making an oil distribution block, for folks doing just this. However, and I may be incorrect, but it doesn't seem like he is doing them anymore - again, I could be wrong. Does anyone else make an oil distribution block, that would allow the use of the factory oil pressure sender, as well as two *accessible* ports, for aftermarket senders?

    I would like to use the stock E30 325i oil cooler (as I have many of them, and obviously mounting wouldn't be an issue at all). From a visual inspection of a 325i unit, to a Z3M S54 cooler, they don't look all that different. My question being, would a 325i oil cooler be sufficient enough for an S50/S52? I don't see why it wouldn't be. Having some -10 AN to metric lines fabricated up, shouldn't be too difficult.

    Other than that, I don't think I am missing anything else - and if I am, this is the place to discuss it! Just want to know exactly what I am getting myself into, before I do it.

    Or you can just tap the hole to m14. I have done that many times.

    And 325 cooler is probaply just fine.

      Albeit pricey, this works awesome for everything you want...



      Have one on a customer car at the shop.

      Forget the stock oil cooler. It's mounted in a horrible place that gets no air flow (it's face-mounted to the lower radiator support), the Mishimoto oil cooler looks great and fits right behind the lower holes in the stock valence...

        For that you need to add recirculating thermostat to the lines if it's going to street car. Otherwise oil temps will rise very slowly to operating temp. The s54 housing has thermostat built in, so it will be more cost effective that that oil filter cap plus thermostat.

          Where is the thermostat on the s54? I installed an aftermarket oil cooler on the e30s54 and the oil immediately flowed out of the leaky line in the initial start up. Also I am running that oil cap adapter on a client's race car, no issues with oil warm up, but at the same time this is South Florida lol

            It's inside the oil filter housing:


            And it blocks oil coming back from cooler and allows oil to go straight to oil filter when in normal position. So yeah the oil will spray out if you have leak in the line :D

              Thanks for the pic, was trying to dig through my buuld pics. Yeah, that makes sense then. Leak was actually amplified if the t-stat was closed. Derp.

                I have an s52 with s54 oil filter housing. I'm losing belts, has anyone had that happen & if so what was the solution?

                  Are you running the deflection pulley off the alternator?

                    Sorry, I did not see your post. I'm not sure what a deflection pulley is, I have an ActiveAutohaus Rotrex C38 SC that has 2 additional pulleys.

                      I found the defelction pulley & ordered one, I have tried a belt size down & 2 up, all come off. I have 4 "OEM" tensioners (URO, Febi etc) they all cannot keep tension (land over 1/4" plus from where they should be & the belts move forward from 1 second of running (largest came off)

                      I ordered a hydraulic for an S/M54 as I am running out of ideas yesterday. I can't believe a freaking belt has kept me from driving it for over 3 weeks.

                      Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope...

                          I would be looking at pulley alignment over finding a different tensioner...
                          84 325e - 91 325i - 92 318 touring - 91 Trans Am - 01 S4 avant - 03 S-type R - 96 F350

                            I got an S54 power steering pump to fix that as the S54 filter housing has a different mount. I know others have used the S54 filter housing to get the cooler lines for a Zionsville cooler.

                            These tensioners do not offer tension.

                              Solution was the Hydraulic tensioner and belt 2 sizes smaller.
