Good Morning everyone -
New member here, but a long time reader. Just lost my BMW virginity and picked up an e30 - 91' 318i 5spd. I've always loved these cars, so i'm looking forward to getting it cleaned up and running strong so i can show her off!
The car is in pretty good mechanical condition, save a few issues here and there. I've replaced some items (o2 sensor, coolant temp, plugs/wire, etc) that were LONG overdue and that has helped it to run much better. Off to the question at hand....
The car experiences a hard cut at around 4,500 to 5,000 RPM. It feels almost exactly like its hitting a limited, but only last for a couple hundred RPM before it pulls strong up to the RL. It happens in every gear expect 1st, and only occurs when i'm driving "spirited." In other words, it does not happen if i gradually wind the car up towards those RPM's. I do get a engine code when this occurs - code 1234. However, from what i've learned this is a speed reading error code. The speedometer does not work in the car - i have replaced the rear diff speed sensor but no dice.
My question for you Guru's is whether this cut out/misfire would have anything to do with the speedo not working, or if they are unrrelated issues. I've seen a couple comments where the thought is that the computer uses the vehicle speed signal to influence the fuel trim - but i don't feel good about that answer. Plus, if that were the case wouldnt this be happening across the whole RPM range? Im leaning towards a fuel delivery issue - either a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator or a failing fuel pump.
Any and all help/insight is appreciated.
Cheers!
