any ill conceived ways to get trans inputshaft bearing out

yes, I know the bentley manual and all sane advice states that you have to split the manual transmission to replace the input shaft bearing....

but... It's a lemons car, and as such it's blown up several transmissions in the past few races for "reasons" (including the guibo failing and the driveshaft going all helicopter and breaking one transmission in 2 and cutting a hole in the tunnel like a tuna can) anyway, the trans that's in it now went in the day before a 16 hour race, it shifted beautifully until the input shaft started making noise at hour 15.5 ( and yes we just continued to drive on it to the checker flag)

anyway, I don't want to find a 4 replacement transmission, is there any ill conceived way to just pull the damn bearing from the front? (IE drill into the race and use a slide hammer puller etc. (yes I know... it'll introduce metal into the trans case yada yada yada.... it's a damn lemons car!

    any thoughts?

another option.... I have one transmission that's only fault is that the shift selector thingamajic is busted off in the transmission, if theres an easy way to replace this I would have a working transmission.

also... does anyone need rebuild cores? I have 3 laying around that I'm about to pull apart and weld into a coffee table.

You can make a couple ofhalf- sphere shaped rods, bust out tge carrier between the
balls, and then make up a puller and try yanking it that way...

Sadly, the countershaft bearings aren't any tougher than the input.
G260's in decent shape are getting harder to find for cheap around here, too...

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

I considered trying to weld a piece pipe to the outer race and giving it a yank as well.

is there any easy way, when i've got the trans out to ascertain if it's the input or countershaft thats bad? since I can't spin the transmission at any appereciable rate with my bare hands.

There is a specialist puller for getting the input shaft bearing out but you can make you're own.

Take a look at the bottom of this page:

Doesn't look too difficult to fab that up.

Edit: I knew I'd seen it somewhere http://www.skf.com/group/products/ma...kit/index.html

Though it's prolly a squillion quid + tax.

in the spirit of lemons; (I ran lemons for years)

you should just DIY learn how to tear down the G260; since you have 3 bad ones and are racing with the free-build strategy.

its honestly not that bad and you can destroy at least one of them learning how to break it apart.

if you have one bad bearing at the front the likely hood of one bad bearing at the rear is high.

why not just figure out whats wrong and fix it the lemons way via school of hard knocks?

The front Bearing of the g265 is similar and new ones are also NLA; had to hunt for the one I installed pictured.

Factory method to get it out the old one in my hand was to use the bmw claw /lock ring + push screw puller to remove the bellhousing side split Bearing race, then pull the front case section of the transmission off.

Both main and lay shafts gears/main bearings are housed in the middle section of the transmission; the front and tail come apart relatively easily.

hm its a moot point now, bearing looks free but the whole trans is locked up. I can only turn it over when in gear with hammer blows to the output flange. luckily I scored another transmission at half price pick your part day on saturday. and some how a rebuilt 885 head for $130 and $50 respectively
