    Blown clutch/trans - need help/advice please

    Hi all,

I'm seeking some advice on the possible problems on my old girl. I'm not super experienced with cars but trying to learn, go easy on me if I don't have the right words.

Hope I've hit the right thread as well, first post.

So I have had an ongoing issue with my trans since I had got my 1991 318is. Essentially when the car is cold, or if it's pushed too hard, when I would go from first to second, for the first few moments after engaging second, I would have power loss. The engine revs but no speed.

This would happen rarely as I don't drive that hard often and it would go away after leaving the car to cool down

I haven't seen the issue for months but tonight I was feeling naughty and attempted a pull. I dropped first in at 3k-4k revs, not very smoothly.. And I heard some loud noises from within car. Assuming under gearbox. Sounded like some pretty loud knocking and vibration. I could feel car shake with each knock.

I pulled over and have left car over night where I parked. I did try first and reverse, both where stuffed. Idles okay in neutral, I can enter first and reverse gears without issue but as soon as I ease off the clutch I get the same knocking and vibration and the car jerks forward.

Has anyone any idea what could be wrong?

If I'm up for a new gearbox, is there any point in looking for some kind of upgrade? Like an e36 gearbox? I think they're 5 speed as well. As mentioned Im not an expert.

    Tl:dr
Attempted a pull from traffic lights, something "exploded" making a loud banging noise, lots of vibration and noise and jerkyness when trying to use first /second gears.

Most likely a broken pressure plate.

I'd look at the driveshaft first. Sounds like something came apart,
either the trans mount, a motor mount, or the guibo or center bearing.

        Easy to rule out.
