    M42 race engine build

Hi all, I have just joined R3Vlimited and thought i would share with you my current project. I have been running my E30 318i track car for a few years now with my fairly stock M10. Only mods were the removal of the water pump, pod filter, exhaust and a MoTeC m800 ecu. Pic of old engine below

The engine also has a lightened M20 flywheel conversion, 4 bosch MEC717 coils fired by a Nissan igniter pack and all run on a MoTeC M800 ECU with 1mb data, closed loop lamda and multi spark upgrades.
The car has full adjustable Ground control suspension and is also lightened down to 930kg including the 6 point roll cage. I will updat as more progress is made.

            Nice!

Are you tuning the headers? The m42 header is actually a nice design for factory units.

                    Very nice!

Did you grind the lobes differently to work with the solid lifters, or ar you using a hydraulic profile?

Either way, very interested in seeing your impression of the motor on track!

In reply to some of the questions, The injectors are Bosch blue top items found in the Mitsubishi Magna sold here in Australia. $10 each usd, i just had them reconditionedfor $30 each. I don't know what I am doing with the fuel regulator yet. I will run it on the dyno and see what gives. Now the headers have been an issue. Yes the headers from the factory are OK, remember i have a steering shaft on that side, but the two i had were cracked. There are only crap off the shelf ones that i could find to buy locally. I did find a chap in Malaysia that make stainless sets but they were not a tuned lenght pipe. good price though $460 plus $60 freight to Australia. See pic below

I am now getting a set made from a retired guy that has a lot of experience and is making them in a 4 into 1 design for me. Will only cost $500 too.
As far as power output, i can only hope for a figure at the moment. I beleive that US HP is measured different to METRIC HP, so this may be irrelevant. The head has been flowed to 234BHP, i am aiming for around 210 to 220 BHP. The dyno i get my car tuned on is a hub dyno so it always reads higher too as there is no power lost through the wheels. My e24 ran 515 RWHP on it but i have only seen 436hp on a rolling dyno.
I purchased alot of my parts from Top End Performance in Hollywood, including the cams and solid lifter conversion kit. When the head guy here was setting it up he said thet it was all a missmatch. Buckets were wrong, cams were a hydraulic profile etc. So the buckets were returned to TEP and VW 35mm items were sourced by the head builder. This is when my NEW Shrick 256 cams were sent away to get re profiled. Yes I could have returned them but i could not be bothered sending them back to the US, paying the freight and then having to wait for a refund to come back to me. Oh yeah, we are running the lighter M44 valves too.

planning on both of these myself... yanno, whenever.

have you seen the Metric Mechanic single-row timing chain kit? i'm guessing it would complement what you mention above pretty well.

Good info! Bummer about the solid lifters being wrong. That seems to happen a lot with TEP unfortunately!

The M42 tubular manifold is decent. Its better than a cast M20 unit. There are still gains to be had from a proper long tube unit!

Your car looks great! I like the looks of the fiberglass bumpers and green paint. The idea of a light, higher output M42 is very cool.

How much front camber do you run? looks crazy!
