    RIP Dan Gurney :(

Arguably the most influential American of all time in motorsport. I'm sad I never got to meet him. The only American to win a Formula 1 race in an American car (of his own construction, no less), inventor of the champagne spray at Le Mans in 1967, inventor of the Gurney flap, creator of the dominant AAR Indy and GTP cars...the list goes on. Most of all, he seems like he was just a cool guy to talk to.

          yes that is indeed sad.

its always a shame when your heroes/mentors pass on.

i remember in the late '90's or so when jimmy doolittle passed away. i was also very sad that i never got the chance to sit down and have a chat with him.

93, my great grandpa was his cousin. I met him, but I was 9 and didn't know what he had done, I wish I were older as he did alot of amazing things in life. I gave my son his name as his middle name.

i used to work in a video store for a year or so when i was in college kalamazoo, mi. this would have been around 1992 or 1993. there was a fairly regular customer that came through there having doolittle as his last name. at that time, he was probably in his late 20's or early 30's and wore round lens wire frame glasses that were in style at the time. i asked if he was related. he told me that jimmy was his grand dad. apparently, he was a relative of yours too.

And respected by everyone it seems. A long history of being a really decent guy.

I have a bunch of Dan pics.... I apologize if overload...

The pictures I've seen of him with other great drivers always show friendship and respect.
