Education in the US is not failing.

We have heard for some time now that the education system in the US is "failing". No doubt there is room for improvement as there always is. But if the education system is such a failure, then why are our universities dominating the rankings? The Academic Ranking of World Universities (which is a Chinese organization by the way), The QS World University Rankings, and the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings, are all completely dominated by US universities, in every single statistic. And our citizens also have the highest rate of secondary education attainment in the world. So, what gives?

There are too many sources to post here but all the information is available at the respective organization website.

EDIT: And here are some statistics in regards to K-12 education. http://nasspblogs.org/principaldiffe..._stupid_1.html

This. You should see the horrid first grade textbooks my nephew has. Virtually everything important from history is left out. The focus is heavily shifted to feeling good and listening to the government. Scary stuff. Even the teacher sends home notes with glaring spelling/grammar errors.

Meh, its not universally failing. Its really on the parents. In certain districts, where the parents give a shit, schools and teachers are held to high standards. Parents will willfully vote for a property tax to improve the local schools and actively participate in the education of their children.

Those who just hand their kids over to govt run daycares will have loser kids no matter how much money we invest into them. That experiment was attempted in KCMO, it failed miserably. Tripled what they spent per student and the grades did not change.

That PISA thing is kind of bullshit. There are something like 30000 (public) schools in the US and they choose 240? That is less than 1%. The variance between schools can be so different, even in one area, that I can't imagine that's an accurate depiction of educational health.

Holmes you can celebrate beating out Mexico, Spain, Greece, the UK, Ireland, and Hungary all you want, but the US is behind Poland, Estonia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic according to OECD: http://www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org/topics/education/

The chief problem is high school graduation rates, but there are other issues:

And here is the most problematic areas for that:

You fix the issue with K-12, you will also change the economic condition of the students as well as improve economic growth potential of the country. And it might not be funneling everyone into those fine universities but catering to the fact that some people aren't bookish but could be retained if were given more hands-on training and practical skills - not just being taught for a standardized test.

University or tech school. Go through testing by 8th grade, make the choice, live with it.

No of course not everyone is worth the same pay scale. Just wondering if slammin thinks he is above doing such blue collar type of jobs is all.

And you might be kinda surprised just how much a good garbage man or good construction hand can make.

Yes, our educational system is sliding backwards and has been for some time. In large part it because our parenting skills/effort is doing the same. My wife has been a teacher for almost 20yrs and kids now run the classroom, regardless of grade level. Teachers are so handcuffed by political correctness it’s virtually impossible to have discipline in the classroom. Every statistic in school is manipulated. You want lower infraction rates, don’t let teachers write up students or suspend them for infractions. Higher test grades? Only teach to a test, and funnel competent kids who just don’t put forth an effort into E.S.E. programs so there scores don’t count against the school. It’s all about statistics and chasing the funding. Sickening when you see what goes on behind the scenes. Parents must be involved if they hope to have a child with a decent education. From a public school educator family we are strongly for school choice/vouchers.

There is a reason my wife and I spend $20k a year for our children to attend private school. Attend a private school pep rally or classroom observation, and then your local public schools. The difference will be stark in most cases.

To sleeves point; there is a huge lack of skilled tradesmen currently. You can make a damn fine living learning a trade. Combine that with basic business classes and you will see great potential for success and entrepreneurship. There are a lot of plumbers, electricians, and other tradesmen that are worth millions.
