Nothing major this week, just pulled the cluster so I can send the 63L fuel gauge off to BavRest and getting a 55L fuel gauge. While I was in there, I figured I'd verify my coding plug and make sure my 13 Button OBC was correct. Of course, why would anything on my car make sense.

Here's my 325iS Cluster Coding Plug...

    which correlates with:

    62-11-1-377-368 Coding plug for 325e/eS -9/87 "06"
    62-11-1-385-580 Coding plug for 325e, 10/87+ "19"
    62-11-1-385-468 Coding plug for 325i "BMW 17"
    62-11-1-381-699 Coding plug for M3 "12"

Now let's take a wild guess at what coding plug I have on the 13 button OBC...

Here's a list so you can use to help make a guess:
    318i 3-3 TYP 65-81-1-376-027
    325e 3-8 TYP 65-81-1-373-698 84-9/86
    325e 3-1.4 TYP 65-81-1-381-795 9/86-9/87
    325e 3-1.4 TYP 65-81-1-385-941 9/87-
    325i 3-1.2 TYP 65-81-1-381-793 up to 9/87
    M3 3-1.1 TYP 65-81-1-381-792
    528e 5-8 TYP 65-81-1-375-814 85-87
    528e 5-1.3 TYP 65-81-1-385-031 88+
    535i 5-6 TYP 65-81-1-375-826
    M5 6-4 TYP 65-81-1-375-812
    635CSi 6-2 TYP 65-81-1-375-021 85-87
    M6 6-4 TYP 65-81-1-376-208
    735i 7-4 TYP 65-81-1-375-823 85-87

    drum role....

yea that's right men, I have a M3 3-1.1 TYP 65-81-1-381-792 coding plug in the 13 button OBC.

    Of course I also have my e28 535iS 13 button OBC, but it's a Type 56

but it does me no good.

Looks like the EVAC portion of the dash is coming back apart. Also, what would cause my EVAC, cigarette ash tray and light control unit light bulbs to stop working?

Does anyone know where I could buy a 325i On Board Computer Coding Plug? 325i 3-1.2 TYP 65-81-1-381-793 up to 9/87

So last night I was cruising Craigslist and saw this 1989 M3 for sale for $15K. I freaked and copied the URL and posted it on the r3v facebook group.

and within 30 minutes the car sold.... Apparently it was an original owner car with 288K on it. Then I deleted the post because it was sold and I was sick of getting the notifications.

In hours this post popped up.

Dude, over 50 comments - insane. Then I wanted to kill myself because I had that amount in the savings account and I could have driven right over and purchased it, flipped it and doubled my money. Err, FML!

Oh well, still glad I helped the community out. Apparently I'm getting a gift?!

Yesterday I picked up a 3.1.2 coding plug in a broken 13 button OBC.

        Damn screen issue man!

I started a thread on gathering ideas about how to fix the screen, located here.

I also shipped off my AFM and my 63L fuel tank gauge to BavRest over the week.

While I had my cluster out, I figured I'd work on my windows. So what I didn't know is that the Cluster is required to send a signal to the alternator for it to charge. Crazy man!
So I've also had issues where my interior bulbs (like in the HVAC, and the controls, and rear ash tray) went out after I just replaced them.

I started looking into the voltage regulator, it actually looks great, here's an old worn out VR to the one that's in my car:
        [

I guess I'll wait to get the other fuel gauge back from BavRest to put my cluster back in to trouble shoot everything. I hate the gremlins that plague this car. I blame the PO....

actually, I get rubbing on the rear arch when I have my tools and extra set of tires in the car.... so under full compression the rear isn't perfect, but I'd rather not have front and rears with different offsets because I am cheap and like to rotate my tires...

            Small stuff today.

The trunk lid lift mechanism is spot welded in places on the rear deck. One spot weld in the trunk lid water channel was broken. I cleaned it up and had my buddy weld it. It's not perfect, but we didn't have access to a TIG, so it'll chooch until I have the time to send the car to the body shop to get it properly patched.

I also got rid of my enkei 92s because I didn't want to worry about finding another set of spacers, then also grabbing more hub centric rings and worrying about all of that shit. So I picked up some clean bottlecaps. I've always liked bottlecaps.

I sandblasted them and I'm playing around with the colors. I initially painted one with "black night metallic" but I want gold and here's why!

e30 Bottlecaps welded into 15 hoops?!

I was thinking about white, but that's just too much work keeping them clean. Honestly, I think I might spray all of the with this black night metallic as a base layer, then throw on gold afterwards... i really don't want to spend much money, but I also hated the black on black on black look the e30 had when I first picked it up.

I also fiddled around with my window and found it's a crimp in the door jam that I originally thought I fixed, but def did not. I also realized I threw in the wrong relay in K3, and my low beans weren't working. I found this awesome set of info!

Disclaimer, these are the relays based upon the best information I have. It's possible your wiring is different than what I have found. Here's the relays for a late model sealed beam car:

            K1 Normal speed relay - 61 31 1 375 474, Orange plastic case
            K2 Horn relay - 61 31 1 375 474, Orange plastic case
K3 High beam relay - 03 32 204 401, Bosch PN, metal case with violet stripe
            K4 Low beam relay - 61 31 1 373 912, Black plastic case, no tabs.
            K5 Unloader relay - 61 31 1 375 474, Orange plastic case
            K6 High speed fan relay - 61 31 1 375 474, Orange plastic case
            K7 Unloader relay - 61 31 1 375 474, Orange plastic case
            K8 Fog light relay - 61 31 1 375 474, Orange plastic case

Most of the relays (474) are your basic make contact relays with a resistor across the coil. The 474 is not available any longer. The alternates may not still be available. Orange is recommended.
            61 31 1 378 238 - Orange plastic case, with tabs.
            61 31 1 373 156 - Green plastic, no tabs.
            61 31 1 378 301 - Yellow (gelb) plastic case, with tabs.
            03 32 019 456 (Bosch) - Orange plastic case, with tabs.
            0 332 014 454 (Bosch) - Light blue plastic, no tabs.

The K3 (401) relay is a 5 pin changeover relay with a resistor. The original metal case is no longer available. The 911 part is recommended
            61 36 1 388 911 - Violet plastic case with mounting tabs.
            03 32 209 151 (Bosch) - Black plastic case.

The K4 I'm not absolutely sure about. This is the one that has the most variance over the years. According to the diagram, it's a 5 pin relay with dual outputs where the output legs are not tied. The 912 fits the bill for that. If yours only takes a 4 pin relay, it's likely it's the 474 part from earlier. Here are some alternates.
            61 31 1 373 911 - Mint green plastic case, with tabs.
            61 36 8 353 447 - Mint green plastic case, with tabs.

            more:

            K1, K2, K4, K5, K6, K7 - 4 pin. Basic make-contact relay with current limiting resistor across the coil. Typical part numbers:
            61 31 1 373 156 - Green plastic, no tabs.
            61 31 1 375 474 - Orange plastic case, no tabs.
            61 31 1 378 238 - Orange plastic case, with tabs.
            61 31 1 378 301 - Yellow (gelb) plastic case, with tabs.
            03 32 019 456 (Bosch) - Orange plastic case, with tabs.
            03 32 014 454 (Bosch) - Light blue plastic, no tabs.

K3 - 5 pin. Change-over relay with current limiting resistor. 87a is hot at rest, 87 is hot with the relay energized.
            03 32 204 401 (Bosch) - Metal case with violet stripe.
            61 36 1 388 911 - Violet plastic case with mounting tabs.
            03 32 209 151 (Bosch) - Black plastic case.

K8 - 4 pin. Make-contact relay with current limiting resistor and a diode on the output leg of the coil.
            61 31 1 374 631 - Black plastic case, no tabs.
            61 31 1 380 013

Main Relay - 5 pin. Make-contact relay with surge suppression diode across the coil and a diode on the input leg of the coil. Output provides dual 87 pins.
            12 63 1 711 266 - White plastic case, with tabs.
            61 36 1 729 004 - White plastic case, with tabs.
            12 63 1 729 004 - White plastic case, with tabs.

Fuel Pump and O2 heater relays - 4 pin. Basic make-contact relay with current limiting resistor across the coil.
            61 31 1 373 156 - Green plastic, no tabs.
            61 31 1 375 474 - Orange plastic case, no tabs.
            61 31 1 378 238 - Orange plastic case, with tabs.
            61 31 1 378 301 - Yellow (gelb) plastic case, with tabs.
            03 32 019 456 (Bosch) - Orange plastic case, with tabs.
            03 32 014 454 (Bosch) - Light blue plastic, no tabs.

Small Update on the 325iS. Preppin' it to be handed over to my parents while my wife and I move abroad. It'll be a weekend driver type of deal for my pops.

I finally got the bottlecaps all squared away. I must say, I wish I had gold paint instead of that black shit. I just had 4 bottles and I couldn't justify spending more money when I had shit on hand.

I also worked on the intermittent driver's side window issue. It's at the C405 connection in the door.

I took the connection apart, it's actually genius.

The PO bypassed the connection for the window motor, and now that I've stopped using the power side view mirrors, I think I'm going to eventually strip the rest of the harness out. My Central Locking doesn't work, I don't want to keep the power mirror set up and I don't currently have tweeters in the car. So I'll eventually get rid of it and do some weather pack.

I took a picture of the e30 the very last time it was in my rental property garage. This garage helped me burry the e28 535iS, birthed the e30 325iS, helped me perform tons of surgeries, and helped me part out 4 other e30 clunkers. It was a cool garage, but not anything near what I want to end up in... here she is:

And now that I'm staying at a buddy's house, the snow dumped on us... here's a picture of the e30 covered in snow out here in Va Beach.

Also picked up some H&R spacers used for mad cheap. 15mm & 20mm

I think they should look about like this when I put the spacers on.

                Admin notes for myself:

Engine was rebuilt at ODO reading 209,761.

                Oil Change at 217K.

                Things to do:
                1. A/C - the lines need O-rings and I'd honestly look at ensuring the lines are not going to rub through along the passenger frame rail. The belt is in the green bag in the trunk or in the green trunk under the house.
                2. Interior lights - there is a very specific bulb that's required for the dash lights (not cluster). I purchased LED replacements to test (through a very reputable source) that are supposed to be interchangeable. They are in the green trunk under the house. There same bulb fits in the ash tray by the back seats, the front ash tray area, the HVAC nob, and the headlight knob assembly
                3. The two overhead interior lights function at the assembly, however, the driver's side switch (in the door jam) doesn't work - so when you open up the door, it doesn't open the circuit. my assumption is the connection is corroded.
                4. There is a ton of extra wire harness in the door that is no longer needed. I want to get rid of the side mirror control harness, sell those nice side views for $300. The only thing needed in the door are the motors (2 wires per door).
                5. The cruise control can be completely removed, that's the assembly in the engine bay, the computer, the harness and the control knob on the column.
                6. The radio antenna cable is OEM and I ran it all the way to the trunk. I have a Z3 antenna base in the green trunk. There's a mount that needs to be massaged to bolt to the tab from the body. Then you can use some of my extra wire harness connections to make the plug from the Z3 base to the white ground wire. Then the e36 antenna grommet will work to point the antenna back. Then a simple
                7. Oil Light (above). The oil switch on the driver's side goes down to the oil pan. There's a wire connection (circular with 2 wires) that I quickly fabbed up. Come to find out, one of those wires needs to be grounded for the overhead light to turn off.
                8. the Lamba sensor (O2) goes off every once in a while. I'm pretty sure the fuel pressure is off. I think the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is bad, and or other parts of the fuel delivery system. I had the fuel injectors professionally rebuilt so I know those are probably not the problem. I didn't replace the FPR or any other part of the fuel system outside of the fuel tank. I have an assumption that I possible messed up the fuel vent lines and the thing next to the fuel filter are causing the issue.
                9. the rear defroster doesn't work. I'm not exactly sure why it doesn't
                10. the wide-band O2 sensor needs to be run. The air fuel ratio gauge/sensor driver is in a box in the green trunk. If you want to set up that gauge, then you can actually see what AFR the car is running on. Ideal AFR is 13.1 or something. So getting the gauge working might help figure out #8.
                11. I need to re-route the oil filter using the OEM oil cooler set up. Instead of using the lines and actual cooler. I was thinking about just hooping the line so I could run the thing that mounts the filter parallel to the engine. That will help rectify the A/C line interference

Moving to Germany boys and girls and the e30 is staying with the parents while I'm there. So this thread will be taking a nap.

I'll be looking to buy some euro bumpers and valance to put on this thing.

Speaking of that, if anyone wants anything, holler. I might be able to sell you some stuff from Germany.

I don't have any update on the car, but I figured I'd post some pictures of what I did before I moved out to Stuttgart, Germany.

A buddy still had the tube between the stock M20b25 airbox and the backing plate of the headlights:

I helped my buddy pull his M20b25, he had a crazy M20 2.9 stroker build but he ended up selling it after having some issues and went to an S50.

Also while getting ready to move out of my house, I tried to do a bunch of small stuff. I purchased what I thought was the same bulb, but after they burnt out I figured that they were different voltages.

While staying with my buddy in Va Beach, it dumped snow. I took it out to whip around!

Then I finally got it home, and this was the last picture I took before my wife and I headed to the airport to move to Germany. My dad drives it once a week. It looks so stupid with the painted black bottlecaps on street tires.

EDIT, I found a cool picture of the time I spent at the track, which is where I blew up the engine...

on the look out for a e30 touring and e30 parts now!

For Christmas, the only thing I wanted from my entire family (and myself) was euro bumpers. I decided against purchasing 2nd hand because you always get some whack deal and still missing stuff, so I went for the kits from ECS tuning.

Now I just need to secure the 772 valance, euro fogs and a jimmy hill lip.

Here are pictures from the bumpers at my parents house (I live in Germany).

that M3 man... I have no words. Why does everyone have to put everything on social platforms? Because you're right, you could have easily doubled your money on that one, easy. On BAT an M3 engine and transmission sold for 14k...

Anyway, i'm sure you don't need me telling you this stuff.

Yea, I really regret not picking up that M3 and parking it.

I'm on vacation back at my parents house and I'm getting after some maintenance and will be putting my euro bumpers on!

To start out, I picked up some 15in 5x120 Style 5s for $65!!

The maintenance I completed today were new front wheel bearings/hubs, and e90 drop hats. I have more pictures, but that will come later. I'm extremely confident that the hubs are the originals...

The I purchased the special socket, so incredible.

Once I re-torque the hub studs, hub nut and do some other quick maintenance, I'm going to start the bumper swap. I also might go pick up a 87 325e parts car for the interior. Then next weekend I have a trackcross event (only thing I could find that weekend... no actual time trial events).

And today, something started falling off my car...

I put all of the shit that fell off my car in a pile..

Maybe tomorrow I'll show you guys how my car looks now.

So finally got the euro bumpers on. It's really easy getting the bumpers on, but pulling heavy ugly US boards off with that '87 IS lip is NOT cool.

Here's a look from the side:

I still need to plug the holes from the rear bumper up (the plastic trim and the side marker harness holes) and I need to install the $50 facelift lip and tidy up the side marker harness.

I ended up taking the euro turn signal housings and modifying them using the US turn signal housings epoxied on to retain the running light & turn signal functionality. It was scary, but ended up working out. The only thing that sucks is that the US housing with harness touch the valance when the bumper is installed. You have to really make sure the bumper is aligned at the higher end to prevent the harness from being smashed against the valance.

For the turn signals, I pulled a trick I've done on my 4Runners as well as some guidance from another R3V guy. I cut my US turn signal/running light housings up, and then prayed a little and cut my brand new old stock BMW euro turn signal housings. I used plastic epoxy and a machine screen and nut to hold everything together.

The thing that sucks about this is that the plug that fits on the back of the US turn signal housing literally touch the valance when the bumper is installed, so it's not perfect, but it works. It isn't impeding or crimping the wire harness, so I'm not worried about any damage to the harness, it's just annoying.

Also, both euro turn signals' glass broke! All I did was run them on the car for a few hours.

Here's the PN, so hard to find at a decent price:

                                Left Lens BMW PN: 63171375049
                                Right Lens BMW PN: 63171375050

I also built an adjustable nascar style spoiler on my spare e30 trunk lid for track and autocross events. It takes me about 7 minutes to swap trunk lids out after I modified the light harness. I did the ghetto style, bought 1/4" lexan from Home Depot, doubled it up, and used carriage bolts and big fat washers. I also used T hinges, so it doesn't look super attractive, but it gets me a decent amount of down force and it can take the pressure.

The annoying part of shaping the lexan was the fact that my skill saw blade was wondering, so you can see how I didn't get a straight cut across the top, but since it's ghetto, I don't feel as bad. Plus, this is only on the car for track events.

I purchased a really cheap "lip" for a facelift front valance and I modified it to fit on my pre-facelift euro valance. It does NOT fit perfectly, but it works well enough until I find something that works, or I grow larger balls and buy the proper valance.

I also did a trackcross event with my brother at Dominion Raceway north of Fredericksburg, VA. The track was wet all morning, and both my brother and I really didn't push the car that hard because of all those fucking concrete barriers. By lunch, it was pouring rain, so we bounced early. I did rock the additional hood I picked up that received some ghetto vents. I also put on my other trunk lid that I had my spoiler set up. Here's a picture my brother snagged while we were hot seating the e30. We were consistently middle of the field.

You can barely see the hood and how it was cut. It's not perfect, but it works.
