    E30 M52B28 swap with Getrag 225 (G225) Transmission

    Hi guys,

I am looking for the right gearbox for my M52B28 swap which will straight bolt up to my M52 engine, so I could use the stock 320i crossmember mount, shift linkage and driveshaft of my E30.

Found out the G240 from a 318is will be the right gearbox for this.

The G240 from my E30 320i which I have will be mounted under a different angle.

Now I also do have a G225 (#PN 220.0.0225.97) in house. I couldn't find a lot of info about using this one. Should my G225 bolt up easily without modifying the crossmember mounts and shift linkage?

If someone could answer this question I know if I have to look for a G240 318is gearbox or could start preparing my G225.

I think you'll need to get a G260 and use a modified crossmember mount and linkage. Here's an article that discusses the transmissions. What it says about the G250 probably applies to the G220 you have.

There are two main reasons to swap transmissions in an E30: to exchange one worn transmission for a better one or to change from an automatic to a manual (more preferred). FYI, the first scenario is easier. From Worn to Better With both automatics and manuals, there are some year-to-year differences in the six-cylinder

G240s are wimpy gearboxes. G250s are also really wimpy gearboxes. If the G220 is the same as the G250, it sucks.

Thanks for this informative link Adrew! It looks like the G250 (and hopefully so the G220 as wel) do have the the same bellhousing bolt pattern and orientation as the M50/M52 engine!

"Bolted to an M20 engine, the Getrag 250 requires a modified transmission crossmember to account for the tilt and a matching driveshaft from an E36."
--> From which I understand it is not orientated right for the M20 engine (the same as the G240 318is), but then should be right orientated for the M50/M52 engine.

        Anyone who could confirm this?

I agree a G260 should be better, but a G240 should be strong enough to do the job for a normal M52B28. I only would like to know if the G220 is right orientated when it is bolted behind a M52.

Looks like I have the G225 and not the G220.

Another gearbox which is not well known on the internet..

It is from a 320i E36, so M50/M52 and thereby should fit my M52B28 right orientated.

Hope I could use my 320i G240 crossmember mount and shift linkage. Driveshaft I will see.
