    84 325e not chippable?

So I was driving around rather aggressively today, and I was taking it to what I thought was the redline (4800rpm). Each time I went a little further and a little further and still no rev limiter. So I rev'd it till it hit the limiter, which was off the tac (around the 5500-6k range if I had to guess).

So I decided to open up my ECU to check if it was chipped, and both sides of the ECU have boards that don't (seem to) come out.

Are the 84 325e's (Bosch 1 708 643.9 ECU) not chippable? If they are, what am I missing? I was being careful not to bend/break the boards when I tried to see if they'd come out.

Also If you cant chip one is it possible that its just a tune someone ran on the stock computer?

    Should have a soldered chip.

Do the boards come out? And if the chip most likely isn't swapped, could it be tune

Only one needs to come out... If the chip is soldered, it needs to be desoldered, tuned/rewritten and resoldered OR have a socket installed. Most people will just swap to a later style DME with socketed eprom chip instead.

I know that, but I didn't want to apply any force to getting either of them out because I didn't want to risk bending or breaking them, if neither were supposed to come out. I think I've figured out how to get it apart but wanted to wait for confirmation before trying.

Edit: the one to look at is the one with the white sticker, correct?

Well that picture should tell you what you need to know. Unclip the end opposite of the ribbon cable. Of course you always risk breaking something especially since they are so old now. Just be careful.

That I will be, I'll pull it apart again tomorrow once I get to see if I can figure it out. Thanks for the help.

Yes, the white/silver sticker eprom with the numbers on it contains the ignition/fuel maps.
