I would really like to find a completely stock 318i. As far as value, putting a M20 in there will not effect that much but those blue are not going to do you any favors. I hope at least you are going to remove all the screws and the vacuum connection flange from the intake to take off the paint. In for the MT1 goodness. :up:

I couldn't get it to run, but I wasn't planning on keeping the eta motor in that car anyway. IT needed some work, but it would have been OK.1991 318is

Not really. It happens all the time because US DOT was weird like that...
For instance, Ford Focus, First gen body was made for long after the rest of the world had moved on to the new Focus platform. Both were being made at the same time in Mexico (the old, facelifted Focus for the US, and the newer second gen platform for South America and pretty much everywhere else..)

My 318i is a 5/83 build date.
RealOEM shows 5/82 as the first build date available in the US, with it jumping to 10/82 after that. I don't know how accurate that is, but it falls in line with stories of them making a couple very early ones, then jumping to full production a few months later.
On the other end of the scale, I remember a guy here a few years back buying an NOS shell with a 1996 build date.Byron
