I love this build so much.

I'm so in love with this build! The rear subframe fab work, fender flares, all of it!

tip: get a Spal puller fan setup that comes with a shroud, or plan to build a shroud. Fans w/o shrouds are really inefficient at removing heat.

      Comment

I bought two spal pullers to mount. I guess I'll have to fab a shroud...need some practice welding aluminum anyways ;)

Mishap in the vette. Dad bottomed out on the oil filter...had to go save him and use triple A so he can make it to his baseball game.

        .

Kinda killed productivity since I had to do unexpected oil change ;).

Made the 3/16" SS plate to fit fender area. Drilled holes and mounted

Hope the beginner welds hold up. I put some weight on it and they seem alright.

        Test fitting....

Ignore shitty aluminum tacks. I didn't use filler cuz needed to hold the tab.

Hopefully I can go over it and make it look better

Waiting on my fans to come to do the radiator...then Gotta figure out hoses.

Less heat, more gas and move a little faster.

Not sure what tig machine but no more than 90 amps. Turn your gas up to 18 and post flow a little longer.

Don't use pulse, i'm sure people with argue with me here but it doesn't allow you to manipulate your arch. I kinda always explain it as teaching a kid to drive a manual trans, ya auto is easy but you never really learn the car.

It's a diversion 180, all I can control is amperage and AC/DC. Gas was set at 20. First time welding stainless. And pretty new at welding. Self taught. I'm still getting a feel for it. But they're looking a bit better.

Right on, i am self taught as well. Your welds look plenty strong and will hold up just fine.

One tip that helped me a ton when i was getting into it was using the thinnest filler i could find i think its 030 or 035. Helped me build confidence in speeding up.

                1970 BMW Gruppe 2 2002 (M20B29 Turbo) Build

                Updates:

Got my fans in...needed slim fit and this was best way. Hope it will keep the car cool at a stop

Next is to mount it. I found these radiator mount bushings that I can build a little radiator mount on the frame rails

I was given a 3 in 1 mill/lathe/drill press as well for free, which is awesome! I could get some serious use out of this but no room at the moment. So it's going into storage.

But it's 110v and the drill press/mill head can swivel out of the way if you want to use the lathe portion. Stoked to get that set up.

Here I am test fitting and figuring out where I want the radiator to be mounted.

Got it placed and ordered a 90 degree coolant hose and cut it to fit.

Went off on a tangent after mounting the radiator cuz I ordered some 304SS 3" tube for the downpipe and wanted to weld some more!!

                Welded the v-band flange on.

Installed on car to figure out rest of DP.

Crawled under the car to look for my
Path of success of getting that DP down under the car!

Cut and test fit taped up

It fit well, and decided to weld it and installed. I plan to put a v band flange down here as well...

                Clearance from top.

Contemplating putting a flex pipe at this area as well. What's the rule on this? When do you use a flex pipe? I feel one would be convenient for when you bottom out on your exhaust it won't translate up to your turbo manifold and put stress on the studs in the head. Or am I tripping?

Which style is best? Or none at all?

Since the radiator is mounted I can now start the FMIC routing

Passenger side was easy. Just needed a 45 degree tube cut shorter on each end.

                  Halfway there! [emoji12]

Installed the grill to ensure everything cleared and it fits! And hides the intercooler well! Sleeper?? Minus the huge flares lol.

Wanted to make plenty of room so pushed it down low for enough room for a filter. What are you turbo guys using for filters?

Mushroom? Cone? Turbo screen? I've done some research sounds like dry filters are the best for power.

The drivers side wasn't that hard either. Just needed 2- 90 degree bends and weld them together.

It was late and didn't want to drag out the welder...so just took pics and called it a night!

So started practicing a bit on aluminum since i'm a beginner welder and this weld will
Be visible. I did some practice beads to dial in the welder amperage and try to stack dimes lol.

Used the 1 tick 2 tick marking to set orientation when bringing it over to weld. Couldn't tack it in place due to my limited space to work on cars lol.

                  Welded and reinstalled.

Picture time while I waited for my dad to bring the hole saw kit so I can add the flange for the blow off valve.

Drilled a 2" hole and welded the flange then cleaned up the inside. Turned out nice! Wish my welds were prettier! But they'll do.

Installed the blow off valve...took a step back and admired some more. I can't wait to hear this thing!!

This came in the mail also...

Will be running new fuel lines and setting up this 15 gallon fuel cell with integrated 340lph aeromotive fuel pump! States they're good for 750hp. Should be plenty for whatever may come in the future.

Also got spark plug wires to set up my wasted spark...

So next on the list is to:
                  -Install fuel cell + lines
-Make/mount coil bracket and ignition wires for wasted spark
-finish coolant hoses and build aluminum expansion tank.
-install engine harness / pnpmegasquirt 2 and try to start this bitch!

I wouldn't worry about the flex pipe. I used to and have hammered my exhaust to the point of having to replace the same 1' section at the bottom of the DP twice now and I have no signs of cracking the manifold - and my manifold is arguably cheaper than yours using thinner steel.
It did happen to move my v-band once on the exhaust side of the turbo.

Going to weld a bung for an ICVor running without one?

Thanks. Saved me some money :)

I haven't really decided. I may try to run without. But want it to idle nice. If possible with the cam... If I do, I plan to weld a nipple to the charge pipe close to the elbow and do a hose from icv to intake...it's not gonna look as clean and I don't want to buy a ICV...

Hope to talk to someone who has run with and without icv and if it's worth having with megasquirt.

Not sure if its helpful, but I'm running my car with no icv. It isn't boosted or running ms, just a chip, but it honestly idles smoother than before. I have the idle screw set to around 700 rmp, and once it warms up it is very consistent.

I'm gonna give it a shot without ICV...can always add later.

Cleaned out the trunk and started measuring for the fuel cell.

Made a base for the bottom of the tank to sit on... will put another bar down center in between.

I'm gonna sink the tank down in the trunk so the bottom is even with spare tire well.

That's as far as I got cuz my friend came over with a slide hammer and we tweaked my nose to align the fender and so the grill could fit!

                            open wheel rat rod 02?

I need to get a headlight bucket and the front will be good enough for me to start driving. Nice paint is last.

Packed all that shit back away. I need to get everything installed on the projects so I can have more room. Stupid 4L80e is really in the way. Need to get that in the truck behind the 454.
