    If a bulb is not listed here and it's one of the tiny lamps, it's most likely
    a 2721 or 2721MF. Some switches have replaceable bulbs that are not listed.

    Below are bulb upgrades available from Mo Brighta:

    By position, with bulb number and candlepower output. Stock bulb no. and output follow in parens. Output in candlepower (cp) or lumens (lu).

    Standard incandescent- Krypton gas filled bulbs:
    Tail - 17311, 10 cp (R10W, 4 or 6 cp)
    Brake, rear turn, reverse, center brake (exc. 'vert) - P3497, 45 cp (P21, 32 cp)
    Front park/turn - P3496, 3/43 cp (P21-5, 5/32 cp)
    Side marker - 3886X, 7 cp (3893/1893, 3 cp)

    HIR = Halogen Infrared Reflector bulbs, Phillips
    HIR Headlight bulbs are the same watts as stock lamps!
    High beam (9011) - 2500 lu (HB3, ~1280 lu)
    Low Beam (9012) - ~1875 lu (HB4, 1140 lu)
    High/Low/Fog (H1, H3) - Narva RangePower +50 , ??? lu (std H1, H3, ?? lu)
    (RangePower claim: 'up to 50% more light')

    I will be glad to provide sets of these, it's how I try to keep you out of trouble. They're not usually available at auto parts chain stores.

    Watts are equal to or slightly higher than stock, and all bulb bases are nickel plated as required by BMW. I have used these lamps without any issues for ten years, and include them in all my 'Mo Brighta' upgrades to double size and triple output of rear lights. Even if you do not want the upgrade, these bulbs will help keep them 'off your tail' by lighting up more brightly. And they are mandatory for tinted / smoked tails!

    NO, they do not melt lenses or blow fuses or trigger the check panel.

                  Might sound like a dumb question, but what is high stop bulb? Is that the brake light beneath the rear window right above the trunk?

                    yes, you are correct.

                    it is also referred to as a "third brake light"

                          High Output versions for ...

                          Stop, Tail, Turn, Reverse, Side Markers, Headlights (HB3, HB4) also take high output versions that are:

                          Safe, at or very near stock wattage, so no danger to lens, and easy on the wires, fuses, switches, and other parts;
                          Brighter, from 33% to 150% more lumens;
                          Compliant with BMW spec, with Nickel base shell;
                          Perfect Match with the reflector design, the full lens area lights, brightly!

                          I will provide these bulb numbers to the OP if there is a demand, so he may post. It's his sticky, after all.

                          And thank you for this great resource, Blazinxpk!

                          Now, there's absolutely no excuse for NOT having the important spare bulbs (tail, brake, headlight) in your tool kit, so that when you see a 'bulb out' on the check panel, you can replace it 'tout suite.' Make your Check Panel feel useful... and help some clever German Engineer feel good about having invented that sometimes-cranky relay box in the trunk.

                            Led upgrade?

                            Is anyone aware of an LED bulb that replaces the E30 cabriolet dome light?

                            Thanks.
