It'd be a "bright" idea to replace the bulb with an LED while you're at it.

Update: Just did this - fast shipping from the Battery Specialist guys! Went with one regular battery and one with a solder tab. Easy peezy. Original light bulb was still working, so I just stuck with that for now. Can always swap in an LED later, as you only need to pop of the lens to screw one in.diamantschwarz 1991 318is

I wanted the flashlight for originality reasons but also wanted it to work, I know it's just a cool factor at this point. I did a little research and found a write up about how to change out the batteries since the battery is typically the reason the light doesn't work.
How to write up:

I'll be restoring and upgrading my flashlight soon, just waiting on parts. Found a local place called batteries plus bulbs that has the battery for $2.99 each, but it's gotta be shipped from the east coast :/ They also had a bulb for the license plate light, yay! And found an e10 bulb led replacement for the flashlight on ebay for *gasp* $15 shipped from the UK. Says 120 lumens, but kinda skeptical. My AA mag light does 287 or something lumens, so there may be hope for a pissed off bmw flashlight!
Blew it apart. Mmm crusty.

Here you go, boo.

Prep. I didn't get a battery with solder tabs, but the tab with the blue wire spot welded to it doesn't let solder stick anyway.
Bent the tab for some tension, and held in with tape long enough to glue the cover closed with a couple drops of super glue.
Woo hoo!!
Tried to clean the yellowing. BMW logo came off, yellow didn't. Oh, and I hate superglue so much!! What a life.
Oh, and here's the LED I bought. $15.... hrm.
