            does anyone know what's the meaning of M, S, W, N letters are in engine code numbers?

            or at least what do they signify?

            i guess i could go through the list and try to discern a pattern but i'm too lazy...

                Oh, well the M40 was indeed 8v.

                Maybe it was based on the M10?

                  The M40 was the worst motor that BMW came out with. They also have a common problem of the oil galley or spray tubes in the head get clogged easy and the cam is made out of a softer metal so the cam lobes wear out and then the engine won't rev over 4K and the engine goes into a limp mode until back at idle. AMHIK

                              M, is standard production engines
                              S, is Motorsport engines
                              W, I guess is BMW engines that aren't in BMWs but I remember the engines in Minis is a joint project with some other companys and the early motors were sourced from someone else. And I don't know the engine code for Rolls Royce so we can just say W motors don't come in a BMW
                              N, is their next generation engines. First number signifys the number of cylinders, its not a direct though, its still in code and second number is just a variant.
