    m10 thread

So, a few months back I bought this little 318i (and paid too much for it now I realize) with plans to make it into a cheap autox/track worthy car.

Little by little I have been upgrading things here and there, when I removed broken A/C and pulled radiator out coolant came out pretty damn dirty. Also, inside of the valve train is covered with black carbon deposits and probably old dirty oil (car sat in the po's garage for a year+), and of course didn't have any records. Now, basically i've done everything so far other than the engine...have a new clutch kit also waiting to be installed (waiting until I have a z3/z4 shifter and do both things at once). In the next month or so I'll be removing rear drums and installing discs and a bigger diff with lsd at the same time.

What I would like to do is get an m10 head from a jy that's in better / cleaner condition, take it all apart, get it pressure cleaned and then build with all new parts as needed. I did a quick search on here but couldn't find a detailed thread on exactly what works and what doesn't when it comes to m10. Specifically what valve springs/ what valves and cam to get etc.
Now that 666fab makes a turbo manifold for this application it just makes more sense to me to turbo it instead of going with an engine swap (m50 or m30) once I research all that's needed to control fuel and spark.

So, any specific recommendations on upgraded components to make a quality m10 that will last with about 250-300hp (maybe conservative, but I want it to be reliable) on daily basis and won't fail in the middle of autox season ?

    Have at it guys!

For cylinderhead, easiest solution is to find another e30 318i head.

The older "antique" head's do work, and have more material to work with if you go on porting the head, BUT when buying older head(e21 320i or 2002) check that combustion chamber match to your pistons, the old m10 engines have combustion chamber as mirror image to e30 318i head.

When buying camshaft, check that it's for e30 models, older models, which have breaker points on distributor have different distributor gear on camshaft and they can't be swapped between.

The "easiest" solution could be buying whole older m10b20 engine and using it with your current l-jetronic injection, E.G. e21 320i had 130hp.(Yes, if that older engine had breaker points, tha cam must be be changed).

Sooner or later when upgrading your engine time will come for standalone management, m10's have conventional distributor(mechanical advance mechanism) and L-jetronic, which can't be remmapped or chipped. I know that people have been modifying succesfully l-jetronics, even for charged engines, but nowadays when programmable engine management system have became "cheap" is see no point sticking to l-jet, if you are for serious performance.
    Current:

    BMW 320i 2d 2.0 m20 -88
    BMW 325i Cabriolet 2.5 m50 -88
    BMW 316i touring 1.6 m40 -90
    BMW 320i 4d 2,2 m54 -01

I plan on just getting an m10b18 head from another 318i, not a 2002 to avoid having to deal with the differences between the two like you mentioned.

It's still early for the engine management but of course that's something i'll have to go with once mechanicals are set and FI is ready to be installed. Before then I want to get the foundation going, taking it one step at a time if you wish.

2002 engine is known with code m05, m15 and m17, depending of MY and injection type.

The engine is pretty much like m10b18 engine, but the displacement is 1990cc, so it can be called m10b20.

Can't say that anything really special could be made from those stock parts, but b20 engine, with cam and 318i l-jetronic tuned could make some 160hp's.

btw schrick doesnt have any more cams listed in their catolog, you could get one if you were a special friend of schrick (like me) but otherwise their NLA...haha i got one of the last ones that was in the usa...........

slap a e30 318i head on a 2002 block, put a GOOD ems on it, and a 304 schrick cam, and you can make 170 hp (and it wasnt even tuned good) it could probably make 180 or more if we took the time to finish tuning it

Just too many things going against doing a high strung NA motor, I am heading more towards FI, otherwise it would make more sense to swap an m52 or something with more tq/hp from the get go etc...

all you should do is take an M10 head from a junkyard. Go to a race shop and have them check it for cracks, spend your money on hogging out the exhaust ports, that is where you will pick up your horsepower, slightly port the intakes. Back cut the valves if they are all still in good shape and do a 5 angle valve job. Reassemble with new valvesprings and get a cam made for turbo applications. This will usually be high lift, but the duration does not need to be extreme.

If you think your bottom end is in good shape, cross your fingers and put it all back together and add the boost.

Ideally since it is a 1984, you should take teh bottom end apart and just reassemble with fresh bearings and rings.

What part of sacramento are you in, i live by Sacramento State.

Yes, I plan on doing that too (bottom end) but wanted to start with the head first . Any recommendations for shops in sac/rancho area ?

                      I am in 95821 area.

ok, then do what i did in my thread, 2.3 s14 crank, 2.3 s14 rods, ford gt40 pistons by mahle, turbo exhaust manifold, and a GOOD ems....none of this megasqurit bs, oh and a NLA schrick cam

Wouldn't it make the block/head more prone to cracking with 2.3 crank or was it with the bigger pistons ?

pistons are like .5 mm over stock, the blocks crack because tards try to put way too big pistons in

What options for a crank/rods/pistons do I have other than s14 ? Good but not the best/most expensive stuff out there ...
