Quick! 5 speed swap flywheel position notch

    Hi all,
In middle of 5 speed swap. Keeping the Dual Mass flywheel. There's a little notch welded on it, i assume for timing. Does it matter where that notch lines up when putting the flywheel on? THx

BMW uses a locating dowel in between the crank and flywheel on one flywheel bolt to locate the flywheel correctly.

It only goes on one way when installed properly.

        Like this.

One of the holes in the flywheel is larger than the rest to accommodate the dowel.

Wouldn't the flywheel position only matter on an E where younhave sensors in the bell housing rather than up front ?

good question, not sure. Bellhousing did come from an '87 e with dual mass flywheel. It has two sensors in the new bell housing. It's being swapped into a 91 325i vert.

I swapped an ETA 5spd into my Cabrio and we just cut the wires off the sensors and left them there to plug the hole. I also swapped to an RHD 7 lb flywheel which to my collection, was not machined for a dowel.

I just don't see what purpose it serves

Thanks Jeff, good to know I don't need those wires. I'm sure I would have been searching for hours to where they'd go!

Last question. Do I need to plug the holes on the radiator where the cooling lines came out for the auto? Don't want to start it up and have a mess if coolant will pour out :)

The transmission cooler section is separate from the main radiator, the only thing that would leak out of the holes would be residual transmission fluid.

I left mine open when I converted my car.
