    Tranny problems...

    I have a 91 325i with a 5 speed.

The transmission has about 15000 on it since a rebuild. The car has 135k on it. Its been cared for very well, is a two owner car. All records since new.

Anyway, for some reason it all of a sudden started whurring in reverse.. Then it became hard to get it into 4th.. sometimes would grind and pop out. Then all of a sudden it was hard to get into any gear, sometimes wouldn't even go in... it would slip all the time, pop out of gear, make grinding noises, all kinds of things. I stopped driving it because I didn't have the money to fix it. But now I NEED to get it repaired.

Today I went to take it for a drive just for the hell of it.. guess what.. No problems. It was shifting smooth and everything.

Anyway, I am a bit perplexed.. So before I assume it magically fixed itself, I'd like to get some ideas on what could be going on.

    Thanks,

    keith

Oh so that tranny is no good i would assume.

if so i might be able to do something to it but i dont want to waste money on it and i might just throw it back in the car. :D

Goodluck on the tranny though and are you going to keep the E30?

Yes I am keeping it. Once I start making some more money I'm going to get all the minor dents and stuff fixed, go mtech2 and then have it repainted.

how's the fluid level in the tranny? How's the condition of the fluid? Gotta answer those first.

Whirring trannies could be low fluid of thin fluid (ATF is thin, but now BMW uses it in the manual trannies on the newer cars).

              Check the easy stuff first!!

Fluid level? What fluid do you have in there? (use Redline MTL)
Are the trans mounts any good? That will cause what you are talking about!
Shifter assembly in good shape? That can cause the pop out of gears.

BMW 5-speeds are really well built and go easily 300,000+ mi with out a rebuild!

What bothers me is that it was rebuilt at one point.

It dosn't just pop out of gear and whir. When it's out of gear, and I'm not engaging the clutch, it makes a spinning metal on metal sound. It's a ton of stuff all happening at once that is confusing me. It's also very hard or impossible to get into gear sometimes, and you have to pump the clutch to get it to go in.

that whirring noise is not a throwout bearing, that would screech when you put the clutch in. It's the input shaft bearing and it's one thing that should be changed when it gets rebuilt. It's not a service item like a throwout bearing.
