    I'm pretty sure he meant nylon as a material, not nylon webbing. Nylon webbing will hold water, but it is held between the threads of nylon, not in the nylon itself.

    Cleaning belts probably helps them retract because the dirt and gunk in them makes them stiffer and not bend(wrap) as easily.
