I have a 6 speed in my e90 (330) and like the ratios, the shift quality is pretty good (the 240 feels a little crisper), and gears are real quiet. The bigger question for me is what shift linkage parts will I need.
get the OEM selector rod and shift carrier from a E46 330i ZHP and Cut and shorten (make clamping brackets or weld). Easily done and ideally done custom to match your shift lever and rear bushing mount. Order the parts Brand new from BMW, they are very inexpensive.

I guess it would be too good to be true for BMW to have something just right in their parts bin like for the 240, easy enough to modify though.

Thanks,

Seth

the shifter design changed for the modern ZF 6 speed transmissions; they have a double front mount; no need for a DSSARRR or whatever as the shift carrier is dual plane mounted to the transmission

BMW never intended the 6 speed to be direct plug and play to e30; e30 is to damn old.

the track mounting hardware of the E30 crossmember can be made from parts easily ordered from McMaster Carr; threaded track nuts similar to used on a lathe or machine shop mill.

the adaptation crossmember can be ordered from Tyler Timmel @ ARC asylum or Gunmetalgrey/whiteghoost etc. pretty simple; make sure the supplier you choose has a good reputation for actually delivering the product.

BMW Oem part number is listed above (also easily found on RealOEM) and is cheap to buy retail. Blunt-tech can supply you, so can Gluten PS

Wow thanks for all the info, starting to see these transmissions well under $1k now so I'll take a shot at this over the winter.

New/Modern/common = less cost.
Efficiency is awesome

a 135/335i clutchset can also be used -i.e;

e30 with Original M20b25 engine + e46 330 zhp flywheel+e92 335i clutch+ e90 328 6 speed. Would be Ideal for a turbo M20. Daily driver ok in bay area traffic with M20 non-turbo

Modern e90 generation "getrag branded " zf6 speed. Both getrag and zf parts are in here, this one is branded getrag.

I used a 6 speed transmission with OEM e46 dual mass flywheel and clutch setup with my M20 stroker (Alpina 2,7L). It was pretty happy

If you are replacing old missions with other just as old missions...... :P

use whatever flywheel weight suits your driving needs. For daily driven cars in traffic 16-22 lbs is nice

Is the Zf6-speed bell housing more, or less, girthy than the stock getrag 260. and the same question in regards to the actual waffled body.

I'm trying to envision compatibility into a 2002/M20. Thanks.

the bellhouse is at widest the same as the original G260 unit; just stays wider for more length

I have seen a local M20+G260 2002; i think the firewall was shifted for positioning. Not sure about the clearance in the tunnel for the 6 speed; I would assume some massage would be required

Didn't see your response until now, thank you though.

The G260 will fit in a 2002 automatic tranny tunnel with some massaging. The manual tranny tunnel requires some surgery. Basing off of what you're saying no matter what tunnel the 2002 has, it will need some surgery.

Sub'd....I'm looking into doing this soon with my stock e30 with M20B25. Has anyone here actually performed the swap? Other than trans/clutch/flwheel/crossmember. What else is needed? Anyone know a good source for used trans in SoCal?
