If I could find one I would do it. Yes they have synchros. The racing ones might not but those are different all together with different gears etc. Dogleg was not standard on 325i.
close ratio is exactly that! it was popularized in the 60's by performance car manufacturers and race teams. gear ratios were spaced much closer than standard transmissions. the net effect usually meant less top end, but increased mid range acceleration, being able to find the correct gear at a road course is a huge plus.
from what i recall, dogleg boxes get their name from the position of first gear in relation to the "H" pattern, where by the angle created resembles the hind leg of a dog. but what the fuck do i know.
i test drove an e30 323i stroker in la mesa a few years back, came with a dogleg box. i don't recall it not having synchro's; i'm not that good of a driver.
Yes, they get the name because of that...but i also thought they were syncroless.
All dealing with the benifts to the "racer"

Think about this for a moment. 20 years of every day drivers shifting without synchros = not going to happen. The trans would be done in 6 months if not less. It has synchros. Transmissions get rebuilt after every race (for many different reasons, this being one).
Go test drive an 02 Kia and when stoping try and shift it into 1st gear... It has no synchro. Now apply that same thing you just experienced over all 5 gears, up and down shifts and you get a trans that is no good for the everyday driver.
