Question for you guys who know way more about this…

What was the point of an "S/T?" I understand the S was the luxury version and had lots of trim and chrome and padding and leather, so it weighed more.

The T was the bare bones version so it was lighter. They put the S motor in a T trim and got a hot rod.

OK, but the factory could really do what it wanted with the shell and trim - they could (did) gut the shell so it was super light. The S motor they used for racing was more like a factory hot rod S, and sometimes a full 906 motor. It had the wide rear track and flares - that didn't come on an S. Plastic fenders and hood.

So why bother calling it S/T? Was that for homologation and class rules in GT? Did anyone police what the engine really could do?

Sorry for the Porsche trivia questions!

^^ Interesting article here on that topic....The main article is about the importance of maintaining REAL documentation for the collector, but the example used is clearly hinting that apparently some insiders to Porsche built their own hot rods that were a blend of Ss & Ts & others parts.

Sometimes, dealing with collector cars is like archeology: You have to work with what is left. This inquiry began with a plea on an enthusiast message board: “Why doesn’t anyone care about the finest Porsche my Uncle Leopold Schmidt built?” Nearly everyone in the car hobby loves a good mystery and this one struck the right […]

          Well written.

Are they implying the T shell itself weighed less than the S? I wonder how that worked? Did they stiffen up the S for the extra power it could produce?

Last weekend I participated in the first AutoX since I have had the 944 and it was fantastic. The car handles so well, 100% stock except for wheels and tires (RE11s). Don't judge the shitty numbers/tape.

I like the meat on those wheels, looks beefy. Now you just need some HP for those tires :P

Thanks! They are 225/50/16 and 245/45/16.

NA 944s are very similar to E30s when it comes to power...very expensive for little gains. I have a whole new suspension set up that I need to find the time to install, then I will just enjoy the car for what it is (slow and perfectly balanced). :)

I have thought about it, but the car is too well clean and original (55k miles). It was never meant to be a crazy fast car and I am okay with that.

Drove one similar to that today, a 224,000 mile 84 Carrera, 3.2L

It got in on potential consignment, sounded and drove just like I would want a dream car to drive.

This was an 87. Exterior is original and everything underneath is full blown race car(cage, motor, suspension, etc). Definitely felt like a dream car today. I've been around A LOT of 911s but this one just talked to me maybe because it's everything I want in a 911 no more or less.

Yeah the 84-85 I drove was pretty bare bones, just a better steering wheel and stiffer suspension, also had manual steering, which I dont know if it was factory but felt nice.

Nothing beats the sound of a beefy flat six.
