    One brake pad installed backwards

So, I am a dumba** and did my front driver side very quick without double checking my pads. All other 3 were installed correctly.

So, I went for a short drive outside my house like 2 min drive. I quickly noticed it wasn't braking correctly as the front driver side was making abnormal noise. I only did like 10-15mph max and pressed brake pedal lightly. I took it back to the driveway and let go of my e-brake and brake pretty hard as it roll down a little. Did this like 4 times.

After that, I took out the brake pads of the driver side and found the inner one (piston side) was installed backwards. I noticed the shim was all gone and revealed the metal side of the pad. The rotor has all the silicone from the shim. From what it looks, it looks ok...And then I cleaned the rotor with brake cleaner.

Can I put an old shim from an old brake pad and put silicone and be ok?

I did not do any hard stops from high speeds...just light pedal to go over a speed bump outside my street at 15mph MAX. Then did hard braking when it rolled like 5 feet down my backyard.

How deep are those grooves? If you can feel an uneven surface running your finger from the outer diameter to the inner diameter of the rotor, you're going to want to machine that bad boy

I'm still on "the inner one was installed backwards". Evidentially it's possible..but not sure how :)

I dunno what its like over there but machining of discs can be almost as expensive as new discs....

Yeah I wasnt paying attention as I was just rushing to throw it on there and go out to the county fair lol.

The grooves are not that deep...but given tolerances are within 2mm for rotors I'd say 0.7mm? LOL

I guess I'll run it like this and get better brakes for the front. I'll drive it for 2-3 days and check lol.

I was paying $13-4/rotor at the old time machine shop that did other work for me. He would put a heavy rubber O ring around the perimeter (like a washing machine drive belt) and held a hardwood stick against the face of the rotor as it turned. He explained that new rotors are usually not that well machined and his little tricks keep the cutting bit from chattering for a much truer finish.

The last time I got new rotors, 4 Meyles delivered was $105. I like the 1st option even though BMW says dont turn them.

I broke them in and they seem to work fine.

The rears are squealing though. Maybe I did not put enough silicone lubricant on the shims.
