You don't really believe that a lap record and posting on social media was the justification for the expense, do you? I'm sure this will pay for itself in sales- the "win on sunday, sell on monday" concept is alive and well. This is just the modern day version where every sports/super/hypercar comes to the Ring for a ...kmeasuring contest. Porsche clearly put the debate to rest for a while and saw to to it that the record stays @home!

Yes, marketing is the excuse. They are marketing their engineering prowess.

That's why they have visited other tracks already and have more planned for the rest of the year. And they are getting some damn good exposure out of it.

Car companies, performance car manufacturers especially have always been about dick measuring contests. The ring has been very central to that, so yea it's definitely just a matter of showing off. Porsche will sell every 911 that hits the showroom floor regardless of where they stand in ring records at the time, it's not about sales.

It's always about sales, why else would they produce SUV's and large 4 door sedans as well as inexpensive entry level models these days?

I kinda want a series of cars like this now. It'd be like modern-day Can Am.

Soccer moms want a Macan or Cayenne because it's pretty and their friend has one, middle-aged men want a 911 because it's a 911 and it's what middle-aged men buy. The other tiny percent of buyers who fight for the RS models were going to buy one either way, it's why everything limited with Porsche goes up in value as soon as it hits the market. Those are the very few who even know of the Nurburgring, let alone a lap time set on it. This was for their race team and their engineers to fap over while showing the competition whats up.

Porsche didn't need this in the least to sell its cars.

                  It is a marketing exercise.

Associate a brand with certain words/phrases/concepts such as "record breaking," "fastest," "elite," or "high-performance" and it will slowly become the associated descriptor set for that brand.

Remember, people use logic to justify purchases, but buy primarily on emotional level, or based on a rapid (often illogical) binary decision making process, and therefore they often want to be associated with those words/phrases/concepts, in addition to making others associate those same things with the owner of a product.

Also remember that recollection of brand associations fades, faces competition, or becomes confused over time, so you need to regularly update what people are supposed to think about a product.

The Can-Am of the 70’s was awesome

The 911 model line has been going for 50+ years, while maintaining the same styling albeit it moderately changed from gen to gen.

You guys are out to lunch and overthinking this.
