    Value of e34 540i w/ 6 speed?

What's the value these days on an e34 540i with a 6 speed manual transmission? I've heard those transmissions weren't so great and end up getting swapped with a 5 speed.

Anything else I should know before inquiring about one?

    WAT?

IIRC all you have to worry about is the shift detent. Take care of that when it's out getting a clutch. Otherwise they're the beez kneeezzzzz.

They're the same as the 5sp, gearing wise, just have a #6 gear.

The transmission problems I heard about might have been about the m5, I don't know really. Anyway, might as well share what I found and am thinking about getting rid of an e30 for: http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/4449944340.html

If only the interior was black. I'm also wary of the nikasil m60.

The g420 is insanely strong, they're the same one that mk4 supras come with and are holding 1000+ hp.

As for 540/6 prices, they're too damn high like all the good 80's/90's bmw's are these days.

White 95 540i/6 with sport seats is a pretty awesome e34. But... that's a lot of money for one. You can get a pretty nice e39 540i/6 for that price.

Not sure if you've driven one, but I've driven an e34 m5 I was looking into getting rid of my e30 for. It's no e30. It'd be a nice second car, but I wouldn't trade my e30 for one.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

I think your referring to the G265 in the e34 m5 that's a pretty good trans the shitty trans is the G280 from e24 m6's and e28 m5's they have really bad synchro problems most people swap to G265's

The only reason people swapped to 5 speeds is because they couldn't afford the 6spd replacement.

                  This.

Also, Nikisil is a MOOT POINT. If it's lasted this long, it's fine. IDK why people get all bent out of shape about it. It would have failed in the first couple years of it's life like all the others.

                    +1

I have not seen a Nikasil motor still on the road that has problems with the liners, it's been far too long and fuel content has changed drastically. My 260k miles Nikasil motor in my E34 has great compression across the board.

Is it just me or do most 420Gs seem to have iffy 3rd gear synchros after 100k?

                        I'll chime in here...

I bought a '95 black on black 6 speed 540i a few years ago. Had 155k miles. Factory Alusil replacement motor at 80k miles. All original paint and panels. Sold brand new at Rasmussen in PDX, and was a local NW car it's whole life. Nice 17" Style 5s. Full front and rear suspension replacement (including subframe bushings.) I sold it for $6500. I'd say the white car isn't a horrible deal, so long as it's got some maintenance records. Sure do miss that car a lot.
