    Electric decklid failure

yesterday I went to put the top up, while I was holding the button to raise the convertible tonneau, it opened up all the way up and suddenly it collapsed back down by itself? Anyone had this same problem before? What am I dealing with, bad or stripped gears on the electric tonneau motor? The previous owner went and did a semi manual conversion with the automatic top, the tonneau would open via the button on the dash but the top I manually have to raise it and lower

Sounds like you had a linkage come loose. No way to help without some pics of the mechanism in the center of the top compartment/tonneau

I'll post a picture of the mechanism arm in the boot compartment tomorrow I'm away from the car now, but basically the tonneau feels as if it's not engaged with the motor to raise or lower it. I can raise it and lower it with my hand right now

Gears in the motor might be stripped. Common problem.

Possible but gears don't usually strips to the point you experienced, without making grinding noise prior. There is a little spring that keeps tension between motor plate and gear assembly, may became loose and caused separation. You can pull the top section of trunk lining and inspect lid motor. Another possibility, there is a small lever which attaches to the motor drive and the linkage bradnic mentioned, that fails some times. part no. is 51258112682. May not be your case but happens.
