Why was the M5 so much heavier than a 535i?

I dont have concrete numbers but Ive seen it vary from 300-600# which is absolutely crazy IMO

    Anyone know why ?

s38 heads are gigantic, bigger front brakes, bigger sways, thick leather all over the interior, sound deadening everywhere. a bunch of suspension stuff was thicker too i think

internet seems to think top non-M E28 weight was around 3100lbs and 3300 for the M5, FWIW.

200# is reasonable I guess, especially when you factor all of those things...

not sure about what year exactly the 535's got power seats, but the early 83-84 533i had manual seats among other things that made them even lighter than the 535's. I believe they're the lightest E28 with a big 6 motor

It was in late 85 that they got the power seats.

I'm getting 3,230 pounds for the 1985 535i. I suspect that the 3,100 spec is for the eta M20 car. What about the Euro 518i. Hard to believe 2,500 lbs.
Specs datasheet with technical data and performance data plus an analysis of the direct market competition of BMW 518i in 1984, the model with 4-door sedan body and Line-4 1766 cm3 / 107.8 cui, 77 kW / 105 PS / 103 hp (DIN) of power, 145 Nm / 107 lb-ft of torque, 5-speed manual powertrain offered up to mid-year 1984 for Europe export. My E34 owner's manual said ~3600 for the 535i and ~3800 for the M5, IIRC. The twin cam head, heavier transmission, 17s vice 15s, bigger brakes... it all adds up.

Weight reduction is hard because all weights are positive numbers.

In addition to the fact that the M5 has more/heavier stuff, that extra weight helps keep the tires on the ground during WOT acceleration and also probably keeps the car more stable when driven at really high speeds (100+ MPH), esp if its driven like that during a very windy day.
