E to I exhaust swap CA smog legal?

I'm not sure about the legality of it, but I wouldnt worry about it.

I mean, it is possible the smog tech knows a lot about e30s and can tell the difference by the intake, but I highly doubt it.

Chances are, if you have to ask it's not legal (which it is not as far as I understand the precepts of CA smog rules).

Also, they're really easy to tell apart by anyone who cares to look.

I'm the best person to ask, we put a 2.5L in my 325e from a 325iS parts car. Never had any issues in my 4 years of ownership with the 2.5L with smog.

single 2.25 pipe after catalytic

however my catalytic was shot ( inside where a bunch of ceramic rocks) bought a new "E" cat and it passed with absolutely no readings

More then likely won't experience any problems. However if you do eventually install an aftermarket CARB approved cat (like a magnaflow or a walker) and the smog tech runs the number (which they all should be doing) he could technically fail you because the converter isn't the right one for the car. We're talking a super strict smog tech though, so not very likely.

just run the E aftermarket cat.. it should pass.. mine did

Smog shops might notice a new cat underneath the car and request a CA legal catalyst number

Ive had 1987 325e with a 1989 m20b25 swap and a 1987 325 with full 325i exhaust swap pass no issues. Smogged in both NorCal and SoCal as well.
