1987 325i odo and tripmeter- double speed

    Hey guys,

I purchased my car 4 months ago... for "kicks" I was going to see what kind of mpg I'm getting, and have now realized that my odo and trip meters are both ticking at 2x the actual miles driven. I find it a bit odd since my speedometer is right on. I figure this must be due to an issue in the gauge cluster. Anyone had this happen and can explain what's wrong and if I can fix myself...?

This can occur for two reasons.

      1. The drive electronics for the odometer could be failed. I have seen it drive the odometer at extra fast speed.

      2. If the odometer gears were ever replaced, the incorrect ones were used.

Thanks for the reply. I have removed the cluster, and realize there is no "speedo cable", as I was expecting based on my experience of other euro vehicles from the era (primarily VW). So, now I understand that there could be various reasons for this issue.

Anyhow, let's see what I can find out...

so... where can I buy new gears and/or find out what my car is supposed to have? I only see full gauge assemblies from BMW, and they are discontinued.

odometergears.com and garagistic both sell replacements. Odo gears makes them and gargistic imports them (and is a bit cheaper). Ive used both with good results

Thanks for your help. I ordered the VDO repair kit from garagistic- much thanks for the tip there- only $20 and it was here in 2 days. It turns out the "inner" gear (the one with 14 teeth) was basically just worn out- there was a resemblance of teeth, but not really anything left. Anyhow, seems to be sorted out now! :D:D:D
