    Carbon Fiber hood

Who makes the best fitting e30 carbon hood? I know there are multiple manufactures so I was just looking for which one is best on fitment and finish. VIS, Carbon Creations, JP Carbon, MA Shaw

    #2
Shaw is the only cf hood worth buying but it is about $1,000. It weighs less than 10lb and fits like factory. Do not waste you money on carbon creations, eurostop (or eurowerkz or dtm fiberwerks or whatever he keeps have to to change his name/reputation to) or VIS. They still weigh 15-20lbs and the clearcoat fades or and cracks in a year or so. If you do go with one of them, I recommend having it professionally prepped and sprayed your car's body color so it doesn't look horrible in a few months

MA Shaw is very nice, check out Nando's car. Fits like factory.

The Eurostop and VIS hoods don't fit well enough to paint in my opinion.

AFAIK MA Shaw doesn't make a full CF hood for E30s anymore, but competition concepts still does I think.

You could call MA Shaw and ask though. They have a different composite hood that probably fits just as well and is about as light, it's just not CF.

Do you have any contact info for competition concepts? I couldn't find any info on them. Thanks

they have (or had) a website.

              www.CompetitionConcepts.com (from a whois record)

unfortunately it looks like it's dead now. :(

your only option may be the composite MA Shaw hood or one of the cheaper, poor fitting and heavy CF hoods. bummer.

the composite hood actually doesn't look too bad

it's a little bit heavier than the old CF hood but it's only 2lbs and you wanted to paint it anyway.

Indeed Shaw is not making the cf anymore so I bought his FRP hood, it weighs 12lbs and fits like stock, even has the correct bracing for factory sound deadening. VAC has them it on sale for $750 but you are still close to $1000 with shipping, and you have to prep and paint it still for another $300+. Keep in mind that VAC does not have them in stock and I just bought Shaw's last one directly from him. He said he probably won't make them again though, and if he did, you'd be waiting for a long time.

edit: just read the above post that MA Shaw discontinued even the composite hood now...
So what would be the best option now considering you can't get one from MA Shaw?

Talked to Mike at MA Shaw and he said he would make a cf hood an e30. So there is still hope!

Mike is a good guy and I picked up my hood from him in Orange Co. since he is local to me. He does make a full carbon hood and fits perfect but it comes unfinished so it will need clearcoating and bonding of the brace supports on the underside @$1000 depending on the cost of CF now. He also has some nice e36 LTW front splitters that I've seen adapted to e30 that look siiick!
Here's a pic of my fittiment... If you're by Castro's, Chris can show it in person should be on his new dyno this week.

I'm using the EVO hood seals...

Keith at Competition Concepts has closed his doors for automotive at least... due to health issues his products were exceptional as he made bike frames as well for a big company. His work will be missed.

Bump since I haven't seen an up to date carbon hood thread.

Does anyone have experience with LWS designs carbon pieces? They're the only company I can find that is still making a full dry carbon hood. The also make dry carbon trunks; their website lists some weights but the stock weights they list are off so I'm not sure I can trust their carbon part weights.

Look up and call VIS racing. Awesome quality and fitment. Also located in the US.

VIS are the cheap ebay ones we were talking about a little while ago.. I wouldn't call it awesome fitment, but it's OK. fairly heavy too. do they still have the huge dip in the corners or did they finally fix that?

the LWS parts look nice - prices aren't bad but shipping? I don't think their weight on the stock hood is that far off - 24kg is 53lbs. It's probably close to that with that huge noise insulation pad. A full CF, high quality hood certainly could weigh as little as 9lbs - mine is about 10lbs. the box it came in weighed more than the hood. :p

                              Carbon Fiber hood

I wouldn't call anything about it cheap. It's a little heavier than a true Motorsport hood because it still has a frame to it and is still compatible with all the stock mounting points. Doesn't require hood pins.
The fitment on my car is 95% perfect.
After 5 years of track abuse and sitting out in the sun I've had zero fading and zero cracks.
Have had to repaint my front valence and replace both headlights and my windshield because of tire marbles and nuts/bolts flying up on the track. So I know for a fact she's taking a beating.

I will add that it matches the color and finish of my APR GT250 wing.
                              And those things aren't cheap!!!
