I have set up an Electric fan on my e21.. the e21 had an auxiliary fan setup factory and Im leveraging that wiring.. but I am using the e36 radiator and e36 temp switch..
I have not tested the switch yet (not sure how to), but I know my relays, fuses, and fan work (all tested). Now I know the circuit and power to the electric fan is dependent on the switch. So if the switch is faulty, the whole setup wont work. That being said, I cant tell if the switch is faulty or if the temp of the M42 vs the temp when the switch kicks on is a pretty high difference. For instance, my thermostat is a 88 degree thermostat and the car sits at 1/2 of the temp gauge until I idle. Then it slowly creeps up.
I've never seen how far it will go until the fan kicks on and I think I need to just pull the switch and test it... but Im curious if someone has the same setup with the E36 temp switch. Does the fan kick on 1/2 of the thermostat gauge? When does it kick on for you?
To me, the fan should be on once the thermostat is open to regulate and maintain the temperature, but maybe Im just being too cautious? Is an E-fan more for when the temp gets TOO hot, like 3/4 up or more?
To note, thermostat opens at 88 degrees and the switch should open up at 91, so the fan is going to kick on a bit after operating temp... Im just not sure what the difference from 88 to 91 to overheating is...
