I've done this so many times, it's not funny - only had one break, re-used them on all the race cars. Can use string to pull them in, but I always had better luck using a plastic stick made for it, can do them with a new strip in about 45mins, little longer when they are old and dry. Silicone helps a ton.
I got one for my 86 OEM strip from Blunt for my personal car, chrome to match the original - 3yrs in the FL heat and it still looked perfect when the car was totaled :(. Pulled it and have it on a shelf for a later date.
Little trick if you are just re-spraying. Remove the lock strip and push the gasket back, paint the car, then put the strip back in and the gasket will cover the edge of the new paint. Looks and lasts better than taping the gasket :)
