There used to be 245/35/16 Toyo Proxes T1Rs on ebay. They went for $375 shipped for all four. I can't find the guy anymore, but those are the widest, best fitting tire for a 9" wheel IMO. ;)
this is who i bought mine from. $320 shipped for 4 tires.
if you can find a 235/245 tire that will fit a 16" wheel on an e30 please share, because they pretty much dont exist. 225s is the widest. you have to step up to 17" to go wider.
Or go to a semi slick, They are generally a fair bit wider than conventional tyres. My 205 r888 was even wider than my old 225 falken fk452's.
Yes they are technically required. If you go to any serious tire shop, they will have technical data regarding what width of tires can be mounted on what width of rims. Both for handling and safety considerations.
Look at the pictures of the rear wheels in the first post. Don't you think that stretching the sidewalls this way won't affect handling and safety? As for esthetics, I won't comment as it is clearly a non-objective matter.
